Come on, it has to be "For Whom the Bell Tolls". It has probably the best intro ever, and it belongs to the best album in Thrash Metal history. In addition, the lyrics have a deep antimilitarist and pacifist meaning, being the peak at "Take a look to the sky just before you die / It's the last time you will!". Just wonderful.
Other than that, I like "Seek And Destroy" and "Ride the Lightning" a lot. I can't see why people love the song "Master of Puppets" so much when there are some other songs in the same album which are just as good, if not better, than "MoP": Battery or Leper Messiah to name a couple.
First of all, I agree with For Whom The Bell Tolls, even though my # is still Fade To Black, but For Whom The Bell Tolls is truly one of Metallica's greatest masterpieces! And yes, the intro is just fucking unbeliavable!
Secon of all, MoP has better songs than MoP actually is, I guess it's the name and fame of this song/ablum that makes it #1 for a lot of Metallica's fans... I still believe Ride The Lightning kicks MoP.

Hit the Lights - the solos rule. Master of Puppets also kicks ass though. Metal Militia has it's - strange - moments, too.

All the best Metallica's songs are in Ride the Lightning. But coz I hace to choose, I say Creeping Death.
Probably not my favorite but I think in overall, Creeping Death represents all Metallica.

Turn The Page \m/.
That might be your favourite but of it's not a metallica song but a cover.

Creeping Death, even if it was half-written by Tom Hunting. A brilliant riff, and one of the most memorable solos Kirk has ever played.
If we're talking about songs Metallica actually wrote themselves, I'd go for Fade to Black. Beautiful song, with amazing solos.

The Unforgiven. It has amazing lyrics. If i'd have to choose a second i'd say Fade to Black (amazing in every sense of the word) and I love Enter the Sandman because it was the first song I heard by Metallica.

I think that the queston here should be "Wich metallica song is not the best?"
To say which song is there best is quite hard... U always get a new favoritesong with 'em. But if I had to say one song I'd say Master of Puppets. But I have listned to much to it so right now it's not my favorite
Right now It's probably now leaf clover (S&M) or Hit the lights

It's Master of Puppets. it has great lyrics, a slow solo, a fast solo, and a cool riff throughout it. "For Whom the Bell Tolls" is the first runner-up. "Creeping Death" is the second. Oh yeah, "Battery" has the best intro in the world.

when i think of metallica, the very first thing that pops into my head is for whom the bell tolls. it is the perfect example of a great metal song. it has amazing guitars that keep changing throughout the song, epic lyrics delivered by james' great vocals. when comparing it to anything post and justice for all, it simply blows the away.

My favorite would be Blackened. It was the first Metallicas metal song that I heard, and it still sounds perfectly Other really great songs are The Call Of Ktulu, Orion, Fight Fire With Fire, Whiplash, Phantom Lord, Creeping Death, Battery, Disposable Heroes, Damage Inc., To Live Is To Die and The Shortest Straw.

For me its "blackened" but its very difficult to choose. It varies from time to time. Hit the lights and seek and destroy are also among my favourites. And "no remorse" too.
