Pretty much single handedly responsible for getting me into metal altogether with their 'Toxicity' release. This is one amazing band, respected by critics and fans alike they create very original and unique music which can be appreciated on many levels as they take influence from all sorts of genres.

I've always had a bit a of a hard on for Serj's vocal style. He can be operatic and he can also bellow the house down if he wants to, one of the most distinctive vocals styles I've ever heard.

I've no doubt the "are they Nu Metal?" debate will come into play very soon, I for one don't see how they can be regarded as such, they simply have too many styles in their music to just be classified as simple nu metal.

Anyway, my personal fave album is their self titled debut, just a very chaotic release and very heavy and aggressive whilst having some crazy ass lyrics and compelling songwriting.

Why are they "inactive" on metalstorm?

System Of A Down is not a fully featered Metal Storm band. They are only here on the site (but with a 'closed' band profile) because someone (ic Herzebeth) wrote a review about one of their albums (ic "Toxicity", link)
Same thing with Slipknot for example. Slipknot is also an 'invisible' band and so NOT featered on MS only because a review was written about one of their albums.
The reason why is that MS prefers not to add Nu Metal-like bands especially those with a rather arguable reputation and fame in the Metal world... (like Slipknot for example)

Wow, that's really lame. Denying a genre of Metal because of it's fame and popularity. Sounds like denial to me. It's still sad how people won't consider it Metal. By the way, System of a Down is alright by me.

Yeah it seems alot of people here want to forget that entire nu-metal phase ever happend which to me is fine because many of the bands who got thrown into that really had no affiliation to metal at all. On the other hand a real metal band like System of a Down got thrown into that and I feel they do deserve a spot here on MetalStorm. When I was younger System was one of the main bands that got me into metal. I like all of their albums alot and still listen to them every once in awhile but I would have to say there latest album Hypnotize was my favorite release from them. I really like how chaotic the vocals on all of there albums are and there crazy lyrics are cool aswell. This band is not nu-metal they are just a metal band it's a simple as that.

Indeedly do. SOAD in definately a band that deserves its spot on MS! I mean.... Deftones are here (thank god!), Killswitch Engage etc., why not bands such SOAD and especially SOAD? I was just reading the FAQ where they state that there are bands on MS that are rock or so, but were important for metal (Black Sabbath and so, old rock bands), and I really can't understand why nu-metal and metalcore and even alternative rock couldn't be icluded. I mean nu metal is just as much of a metak genre as black or so and it's a stage of development of metal music. Just as rock once was. Just becase nu metal is a fairly new genre with a great mass of listeners, doesn't mean it's not metal. And why is nu metal so popular? Because the music is good! Ok, not all, it's just like any other genre that has bands that rokczzzzz my sockzzzzz and bands that suck, but SOAD is definately a band that is worth listening to, IMO it's one of the best bands of its genre! And if people would give them a listen instead of being all ''oh nu metal crap'', they'd see what an amazing band they're missing. ag!

Erm I don't wanna get all cocky here because basically I like everyone who likes SOAD But it is a FACT that SOAD is not nu metal! They basically can't be described other than alternative metal, because they sound is just... non-describable and very unique. But definately not nu metal.

Their first albums do the trick, after them it all went downhill. There was this funny lyrics in one of their latest albums (I always confuse the names) that go like this: "My cock is much bigger than yours?"; I found that pretty funny. lol

@ Darth Satanious : the song is called "Cigaro" and comes off 'Mezmerize' (the first half of the Mezmerize/Hypnotize double album)

Wikipedia has the following to say about those funny lyrics : "According to various 'interpreters' at the songmeanings.net site, it is commonly believed that this song refers to the whole Bush (or just the American government in general) vs Fidel Castro "battle of wits". The cigaro bit refers to the stereotype of Cubans always smoking cigars ("cigarro" in Spanish), whereas the propegators of all genocide thing refers to the American response to it. The opening lyrics of comparing penis sizes and feces stink levels is commonly believed to be referring to the belief that this battle between America and Cuba has become petty, and to show that pettiness they include a fittingly petty insult - "Yeah? Well, my penis is bigger!". The general consensus is that the song is political and that it refers to world leader's petty arguments and the ensuing wars.

It has been explained by guitarrist Daron Malakian as a song meant to parody and thus ridicule egotistical, materialistic people who believe that their possessions make them superior to others."

Yes indeed, I agree. But on the other hand it's also sometimes very nice (and even more funny) to know and understand some meanings behind some SOAD lyrics.
"Kill Rock N Roll" (Hypnotize) for example.

So I felt like the biggest asshole
(Felt like the biggest asshole)
When I killed your rock 'n roll
(Mow down the sexy people)

Eat all the grass
Eat all the grass that you want
Accidents happen in the dark
Eat all the grass that you want
Accidents happen in the dark
Eat all the grass that you want
Accidents happen in the dark
Eat all the grass that you want
Accidents happen

Turns out "Rock N Roll" is just a nickname for a rabbit Darron once ran over by night. "This song is about a rabbit. One day when it was dark, Daron pulled out of his driveway, and ran over a rabbit. When he got back home he saw there was a rabbit in his yard that looked just like the one he had run over staring at him. He named the rabbit Rock 'n' Roll, and wrote this song about him because he felt really guilty."

OMFG that's fucking hilarious! I tend to listen to their lyrics and I like them because they are so cryptic, but I never try to resolve them or check out the meaning But that one's awesome, I really love that song though Now I like it even more

@Hellrazer: And SOAD being overrated.... Why? Ok, so if you are annoyed by the polticial lyrics... Ermmm ever thought about listening to the MUSIC on the latest albums? I mean, if you dislike even that that makes it kay, but just because of it lyrics and because you believe they are trying to draw attention with it and that they are only studio musicans.... The first albums also dealed with PC.... I don't really get how you can dislike their music on the base of those two ''facts''...

I would like to know how people can get to read the other's minds. Really, there are a lot of people here which seem to have the ability to know the intentions behind the lyrics, the music just by seeing a band's commercial status. Can't a band stay true to their ideas and music and at the same time produce catchy and commercial music?

That's exacly what I have been saying for the whole time.

And the answer is obvisouly no, because everyone thinks a band is a sell-out just because they appear on radio or whatever, f.i. that a lot of people knows a band. I just hate it when people judge bands on the base of that and don't even listen to the music.

I haven't heard them live yet, but I knew a couple of people who saw them at Ozzfest this year. One said they were shitty studio musicians. The other said that they brought the fucking house down with a fantastic show... Frankly, I tend to believe the former, but I just don't know for sure.

Anyway, SoaD is actually one of my favourite bands. They kinda play a very pop-ish metal right now with a fair amount of tra-la-la stuff... but many of the lyrics on their latest album are rather insightful as well... and their songs are so damned catchy.

I also greatly respect them for releasing the horribly tongue-in-cheek anti-emo song, Lonely Day, as a single.

I dont listen to nu meal bands ( i use to listen them , but after some time i found that they just make noise .. there are hundreds of good bands ). SOAD is different from regular choatic nu metal band agree , but agian i feel that they are monotonic. Repeating the same thing again and again.

Once a while ok .. cant listen them again and again. Again just my fking opinion
