Right now I', working on collecting the followings total discography
Blind Guardian
Anaal Nathrakh
Emperor
Borknagar
Therion
Iced Earth
Kamelot
Epica

For some (mostly my absolute favorites) I want to get ALL their releases and see how they progressed over the years (Blind Guardian is, IMO, a perfect example of this), however, some bands (Iced Earth's SOmething WIcked pt. 1 & 2) have released some real stinkers.

I dont bother my self with collecting discographies of the bands i like...i just "get in possession" of individual albums that i like... sometimes i have like 1 album from a single band or like more albums... i think that there is no point to gather albums from a certain band (which i generally like) when i dont like the material on them...

I'm weird about this. I only have a fraction of the discography of some of my favourite bands, and I don't want to get any more, because I'm so in love with the music that I have that I don't want to ruin my thoughts of the band by acquiring new music that may not be as good. But then, I'll hear one song from a new band I am just hearing for the first time, and immediately go get their entire discography, usually to my disappointment. So, in summary, I am an idiot.

If you can't even afford this, you're very poor.

I'm not poor - I just don't have the money to spend freely on entire discographies.

He's probably refering to illegal downloads, which defeats the entire purpose of this thread.

As always as stupid you act and the way you born.

when did i referred to illegal downloads? check your facts and get it back again( of what i quoted and its relatedness).

It just depends on the band. Some of my favorite bands...of course I collect all of the albums. Otherwise, only a select few of releases.

Most of the time i'll just collect the albums that I love, but depending on the band, I can have a tendency to buy them all.

Lately, I have mostly purchased albums that I consider a band's essential. I will buy a discography if I really like a band. Recently, I've been mainly purchasing new releases or albums by bands that were not in my collection so my discography efforts have been slowing down.

A real metal collector should buy at least all the studio albums of his favorite bands, even the worst ones.

Even all the Morbid Angel fans? >_> lol

well, I just finished collecting (Luca Turilli) Rhapsody (of Fire) discography, cept for the EP that was released last year that is really just an audio play with a really long song in the middle of it.
...seriously though...someone change your name to something that doesn't have Rhapsody in it...it's too confusing...

I buy the ones I really like because. I also like buying books and pedal effects but neither I don't have too much money to expend on all that because I'm saving some money to study in Spain.

I used to be obsessed with getting all of a bands albums even if I didn't like some, but I have relaxed down now and only get the ones I like. I will get an album if I only like one song on it aswell.

a bit off topic, but I actually like that EP pretty much .. I agree the narrated passages are a bit long but the two/three songs are awesome

Patrick.
I'm not sure. I always have this "plan" to acquire the complete discographies (studio-albums) of every band I like. When discovering a new band I'll most often purchase one album by them. If I LIKE what I hear, then that's cool, but I'm not rushing out to get more right away. If I DIG it then I'm putting another album or two on my wantlist right away. If I LOVE it then I put the whole discography on my wantlist. So it depends, really. The fact of the matter is, there's just too much good stuff out there. The money I need to completely live out my inner possessed over-anal (Powerslavex, is that even a word? ) collector doesn't exist at the moment. So until then I settle on getting my hands on as much new stuff as economically possible, while at the same time taking notice along the way, of discographies from those bands I newly discovered and really enjoyed.

I'm buying if I like it. In some rare occasions, I am buying the CD's I don't have from a specific band, for example Insomnium. Didn't care that much for their first release, but I bought it anyways, just to complete the discography. Also I found some really cheap CD's from Rammstein that I didn't have, so I bought them too

I'm very "anal" when it comes to my favourite bands. I usually buy the CD when it's released and try to complete my collection. It is harder to do that now but I try to find the cheaper places to get the albums. Sometimes I might download it first but eventually I'll buy them unless it is an album I hate like Rotting Christ latest which I didn't even bother to buy even though they are one of my fav bands.

If it is a band i really like i go crazy until i have completed their discography. After that I feel sad that I can't get anymore till a new album comes out (if it does). I also like to make things difficult, I want to get several discographies on vinyl and cassette.

This is what I do as well. For instance, I got the whole Amon Amarth discography, even The Crusher, which sucks.

Since I most of the time find myself liking the whole discography I rarely have a problem wanting to get the whole of it, and for me that includes the studio albums, the demos and the eps, and maybe also a single, if the song on it doesn't appear in any other physical copy. And since I recently began to collect vinyl, I just trying to get all the different vinyls there is of the bands I enjoy listening to.
But it is indeed very hard when you like many hundred bands and your income isn't that big, so sometimes you have to choose between which albums you're gonna buy :/ But for my favourite band I'm going to buy all of their stuff they have: cds, vinyls, cassettes, t-shirts and all other kind of stuff they will release/sell ^^

Often though I don't care about compilations, best of, singles and most cloths(except for tees and zippers/hoodies), because I don't really care about that stuff. Re-issues can be of some worth, depending on the situation, what it has to offer(if there is bonus songs) or if it is a limited one. I have to admit I love limited edition of things.

I think I covered all of the different things.
