So I have this weird theory that if you put a whale in your album cover, it instantly becomes a metal classic.

One counterexample and we can close the thread.

EDIT: On a second look, it probably has to be a white whale.

I'm stumped even thinking of another metal album cover depicting a whale. I found it amusing to find in the online urban dictionary a reference to 'whalecore' as "a "genre" of music used to describe bands with at least one album in which the cover artwork displays a whale". So I guess Mastodon, Ahab and Gojira are whalecore - according to that definition.

Hahaha, that definition is obviously driven by the same nonsense than this thread, not to be taken seriously. They say that the term "whalecore" was coined by last.fm users when they couldn't define the sound on "Leviathan", so probably all those likes come from their users as a funny fact.
Then the less popular definition names the same albums as in here... so it seems I'm not the only one who thought there is something weird with the whales; but "whalecore" is certainly not a genre as drawing a whale on your album cover will NOT make your album successful among metalheads.

Still, there has to be another record out there. If not, I'm certainly using a white whale on the cover of the debut album of my band.

It's just a little fun fact, and I'm sure theres more album covers with whales too.

A theory is not a fact. And while there may be more album covers with whales on them, they aren't classics. Else they would have been brought up by a simple look through the top 100 of any genre on this site, or the top 1000 of metal albums as a whole on RYM.

I don't think the OP is really being that serious, I think he was just pointing out that a couple good albums have whales on them. I would call them modern classics, all three are pretty well known and highly praised albums, but a classic can't be a classic until it's 25 years old.

Have you ever heard a bad album with a whale on the cover?

Of course not, I already stated that in my post above, although I'd like to think it wasn't really necessary to clarify that.

But on the other hand, I'm still waiting for a whale album to show up and prove this wrong

Good one, although one could argue if that counts as a whale . I don't know anything of this band or album really, is this another album praised in the under?
I see it's has a really good rating here but doesn't seem to have the impact the other three have on the scene.

And there's more than one "whale" on there. Calling it a "classic" is a bit of a stretch I suppose, but it is generally positively received. And yeah certainly doesn't have the same extent of exposure as those others, I would just say that its another great album with a whale on the cover art.

I clearly see one big whale on the moon and one smaller one as well.

I already found a guy that did the same with an album called Sperm Whale. And it was an actual sperm-like whale on the cover good luck with your classic.

I wouldn't say theory disproved now that we saw this album cover above... but theory reduced to white whales only

You are HIGH.

Three whales out of, like, 100K metal album covers is not statistically significant.

Leviathan (or anything by Mastodon) does not appear on this site's Top 200 list.

Your theory is whack.

way to take it too SERIOUSLY.

It's just a little fun fact, and I'm sure theres more album covers with whales too.

Ain't fun, ain't fact.
