I have 67 bands starting by A on my Hard Disc and probably 20 more on CD's so definetly A, but most of them are not something I like a lot, my sister is fan of most of those bands

For me both S and M are the most common. M in my collection has 14 bands and S 13. The nearest to those two are A with 9 and E with 8 and T also with 8. Lucky I catalogued my cd's and had the list with me to write that straight onto here.

In my wmp library, the most common is the S : i got 36 bands whose name starts with an S.
Then 32 with an M
Then 31 with D
Then 26 with A
And then 24 with a P.

But hey, this is not really interesting. Fuck, ive lost 5 min of my very precious time counting.

This is very obvious because if you start a word by S you can continue with any other letter (except X or another S) to create a pronouncable word. None of the other consonants have this possibility, at least in the English language. Try to start a word with the letters VG or RP for example and you can see it's not as easy that way.

In my collection A has always been the most common starting letter, currently with 12 bands and 28 albums. For some reason, M is one of the lowest with only three bands (Magenta Skycode, Mourning Beloveth, My Dying Bride). Oh well, it just shows that I don't enjoy thrash and death metal as much as you do.

I think the most common first letter of band names is "M". It contains many groups : Metallica, megadeth, my dying bride, manowar, metal church, mourning beloveth, morbid angel, moonspel, my shameful and many many others...

For me it is "A" in my metal collection, with a total of 19 artists, but I'd say that another letter in the alphabet would far more common than "A", considering my collection wouldn't be a fair typical example, although I do have very broad tastes in metal and all other genres I like

A - Aborym, Abruptum, Abigor, Absu, Acid Bath, Agalloch, Agathodaimon, Akercocke, Amon Amarth, Amorphis, Amorphous Androgynous, Anaal Nathrakh, Anathema, Angelcorpse, Animosity, Arcturus, Arsis, At The Gates, Atheist, Autopsy, Axis of Perdition, etc. A, definitely.

i voted "s". and i'm glad to know i'm not the only one that's been curious about the most commonly used first letter in a band's name. for the longest time i thought i was going crazy because every band i'd find had a name that started with "s".

i have a mix of almost all letters (well no Xs or Ys, but those "common" yes)...really hard to say which "dominate" - mainly because the starting letter doesnt make the music

In my case it's M (allmost complete Metallica and My dying bride discographies helped) closely followed by T and A. Judging from the poll and from the bands in this site, for some reason S is most common. Thought it would be D with all the possibilities for Death... Dark... and Dream... for example.

M...but if we count the word 'The' as many people don't, T would be the letter.
