Neoclassical metal?

I've seen in many posts the expression "neoclassical metal" being used. It did sound interesting, but I didn't find it in the list of MS genres.
So, let me ask you : what is neoclassical metal ?
Would we consider that some albums by Lacrimosa, like Echos, belong to neoclassical ?
What other bands/albums/songs would fit in this category ?

@ K7: "technical" isn't only for thrash and death metal, it applies for every musician that has a complex technique. Yngwie and Michael Romeo (Symphony X) are very technical indeed.

@ K7: when Lowelas was talking about "technical power metal" I think he referred to such power bands (especially prog-power) with technical guitarrists.

@ K7: I think he has some technique, especially in "...And justice for all", but we can't classify Metallica as a technical thrash band.

@ K7: I got your point, and I suppose that was what Lowelas was trying to say when he talked about technical power, and as you've said, there are technical musicians in almost every genre.

Symphony X, Angra, Narnia, Ygwie Malmsteen, Lori Linstruth of Stream Of Passion, Tim Roth of Into Eternity. maybe Spock's Beard, maybe Pagan's Mind. Basically the idea is usually a guitar virtoso doing sweep-picking arpeggios, at least thats how I would define it. Most commonly it is found in the form of power metal of some variation. Progressive influences are often found as well. In istances such Symphony X and Angra especially, keyboard is used. Ooo and I almost forgot about DragonForce. I actually havent heard of them described as neoclassically influenced yet, though they most certainly are. It's just combined with a more speed oriented form of power metal.

18.03.2007 - 14:56 Written by Bad English on 05.03.2007 at 20:47 No he's not. Playing the riffs fast doesn't make someone technical. I myself don't know much about guitars, but one of my friends said that metallica rhythms(and even solos!) are much easier to play and ther is no complex technique and Death metal guitars are, at average, much much technical than metallica..

IMO neoclassical metal is heavily classically derived metal music. It's pioneered by Yngwie Malmsteen who plays neoclassical/shred metal. Other neoclassical guitarists would be: Rick Renstrom, Duschan Petrossi (Iron Mask and Magic Kingdom), Michael Romeo (alhough SX is prog/US power metal mainly, he has definite neoclassical tendencies) Neoclassical keyboard-metlal would be Vitalij Kuprij. Also a neocl. metal album is Wolf Hoffmann's Classical for me.

Neoclassical Metal is any type of metal which could be considered to have Dominant classical influences. A band renound for this in their early albums is children of Bodom.

Now they might be somewhat influenced by him, but he is by no means their driving force.

Sure, technically, Lahio uses the same techniques as neo-classical players, but he doesn't play neo-classical metal music.

19.03.2007 - 15:08 Written by Arian Totalis on 19.03.2007 at 02:28 By techniques, I don't mean "melodies". There's nothing that sounds like it was made to be played on a violin in COB's music. But in Malmsteen music, yes. However, both Lahio and Malmsteen use the same guitar techniques (sweeping, tapping, etc.). Malmsteen does play neo-classical stuff but Lahio doesn't (at least in COB).
