What does the music that you listen to has to do with your personality/?I dunno i've seen metalheads who are dumb freaks and metalheads who are interesting people with amazing personalities.It's not that they're better than the other people,they're the same just with a different music taste

hmm, I guess that this idea parts from the premise that, since Metal bands tend to approach different types of themes within their music, more varied than the themes of love, money, Christianity, sex, women, of the popular artists of the time, somehow, Metalheads should be encouraged to have a wider knowledge than the rest of the people that listen to popular music. But this is not necessarily. Music is not the only way to approach information and people would not be limited to what they listen.

Also, we would have to see if Metalhead exploit what they are being given in the songs and if they internalize all that. All this is mere speculation. Nothing can be said as long as tests are made in order to establish comparisons among Metalheads and non-Metalheads people, establishing distinctions of the groups that are being tested. We need Metalhead scientists that would stop taking that recurring approach to Metal, almost prejudiced, of only seeing the genre as a catalyst for violence (or not) and try to see if this genre of music has a positive reaction in its listeners.

Totaly agree whit you in this case, i know fiew who are totaly morrons and jerks ho can talk maybe like Beavis and Buuthead, but also I know fiew who are inteligence, so i better hang whit them,, even if its rear

For me the average metalhead is someone who has a stable personallity, more interested in music, both listeninga and composing, someone who prefers things well elaborated than the ones did in a hurry, an organized person but also extreme!!!

Well, the average metalhead for me is someone who knows a lot about music, at least 12.639.475.126 subgenres. But also a person who knows very well what he/she wants about life and has a clear position about everything. A very centred person, organized, megalomaniac, but accessible and friendly, no matter the genre he/she listens to.

You may have oversimplified the catagories of listeners of this genre, but sometimes you have to do this to make a point.

I picked up a copy of terrorizer today at Chapeters and the sales clerk reponded with a hint of derision in her demeanor when she retreived the two free cd s that came with the issue, which illustrates the point that generally the uninitiated do not understand the metal genre.

I went to see Celtic frost a 1349 last year at a club in victoria and I was suprised to see people from all walks of life and ages including a university professor. Metal is wide spread across all ages, incomes and intellctual capacities.

Stereotypes - people who see us think that an average metalhead is a hairy, stupid beer-addict and leather wearing man (a bit generalized view I know). And a lot of metalheads see themselves and other metalheads as something smarter than example a person who listens to hip-hop or trance. But there are a lot of morons in metal scene and outside it - I wouldn't say one group of people are smarter just because they listen some certain music style.

I agree about it speecly trance, if ppl are dumb bass and idiot how thay can compose doom metal and write such poetical lyrics?
Pll think so because we are diferent, thay can recognise us and it trance, and hip hop guys well in all Rīga clubs moust drugs use those who go to not metal clubs 98% and huge article about it wa spubliced, and ppl still think all metalheads are drugusers

Metalhead? should that not just be someone who loves to listen to metal. i dont like the term myself, i like a few other genre's of music...but metal is where my heart is. i Love it. i don't think drugs make a difference either...some people fucked up on dugs can still keep thier shit together to write good music...two members in slayer had a big coke habit in the 80's...when was thier best material...in the 80's.

Metallers are the same as anyone else, but they listen to metal.

Okay, on a serious note, I think what caused alot ov the world to think negatively about the Metal sub-culture is the '90's Cartoon, BEAVIS AND BUTTHEAD , many think that Metallians are all just like Beavis And Butthead lol. Though I love that show.

In The Bahamas, the Metal scene is quite poor though............ As a person, I don't really feel like oppressed as a metal fan.

People make this false image of metalheads thanks to the 80s hair metal and the early 90s/ late 80s thrash metal scene, when many musicians did indeed correspond to those relations. However, this stereotypical idea is cleary not fair anymore.

K7 stated an interesting point, before they start talking bullshit about Metal, why they dont give a try? Why not read a few Doom metal lyrics or some other genre that has something to do with the person's personality. Well, I got my parents into Shape of Despair a few years ago just by showing them one of their songs

Oh I for sure agree with this...but there is so much of this on Metalstorm...if it were my way, I would see to it that a lot of these inane topics with typical and equally inane discussions be eliminated...oh, in a perfect world...just an excuse to post something I guess right?

well, I'm the kind of metalhead that doesn't drink much, do not smoke, and do not take drugs. And yes, I have high notes on school. AND FUKIN YEAH, I fukin love to go to gigs and I love black metal the most. I hate it when some addict "metalhead" tells you you are not a blacker just cause you don't smoke or take drugs, even though you know 10 times more of music than him..but oh well. what can we do for ignorance and weaker people?

As I see it many Metalheadz are nice people and often intelligent. Creative and knows a lot about music too of course, but that's obvious I think. But I can obviously not give a objective opinion about this subject.

Yeah kinda , when i started doing foruming in MS .... i use to reply in each and every post !! But after few years what i see that the same topic is been discussed with different angel. I think i am getting old or i am too lazy to post my views on the topics

I see and know lots of metalhead people who are on universitie and i dont know one who is on a low educated skool. This doesnt mean that metal heads are all smarter or more intelligent then average people. But i think that most of us are more intelectual and brighter thinkers then the "average" person.

Yes i think most metalheads are a bit more intelligent then the average people. Compared to hardcore and R&B people (if we have to label ) i honestly think metalheads are more intelligent and our subculture is not so shallow minded.

You notice a Metalhead either by his T-shirts and Outfit , or by the look on his face , or by both

I don't know how's the situation in abroad, but in Estonia "average metalheads" seem to often be very close minded towards experimentation, musical influences outside metal and stuff like that. Judging by the numerous reviews on the net, it seems that the "average metalheads" in other countries are also a pretty close minded bunch, though maybe the more close minded people stick out so I notice them more often than down to earth and open minded metal fans.

I agree with you. A lot Estonian metalheads tend to dislike anything untraditional in metal, as you mentioned. If I'm talking about interesting experimenting bands to metalheads, they just start to bash it. For example once I let a guy listen to Atheist's Unquestionable Presence, he couldn't stand it, because it sounded too "funky" for him. It's just a problem with most of people everywhere, most of them have their narrow taste in music.

We belong to a unique subculture, filled with our own customs and diversity like no other genre of music. We live in a certain lifestyle found nowhere else, and we are all different kinds of individuals. However, we can still spot eachother in crowds, we can see who is a real fan and who isn't, and of course there are those who we would never guess such things about, but when they get home from their regulation haircut, cubical, office jobs, they are just as true through and through. There is no such thing as an "Average" metalhead, though there may be stereotypes, we are all very unique individuals.

If the bands do not have 20 styles combined in one song they are not narrowminded and neither I nor Tod_Engel said they are, however, people who say that bands suck because of mixing different styles, or for disregard for conventional song structure etc. are narrowminded. People who don't like bands who break the rules are also not narrow minded when they dislike the music of the bands who break the rules, they are narrowminded, however, when they dislike the fact that bands are breaking the rules, as narrowmindedness can be defined as "being not receptive to new (or unfamiliar) ideas", and I'm under the impression that alot of metalheads dislike too unfamiliar ideas in music. How else would one explain that more often than not the bands that are more conservative and reluctant to experiment have more success than bands that are too different from the rest (Cannibal Corpse vs Gorguts for example)?

so you do say people are narrowminded when people dislike bands that experiment with different styles. (so combining more styles together)
but its a matter of taste, some people like stuff with funk and alternative etc and some stick to thrash or death. its not necessarely narrowminded
