Fates Warning's brand of progressive metal is quite unique. Instead of trying to impress the listener with their instrumental prowess in every song (you know which band I have in mind), they focus on creating an interesting and engaging musical experience. Their incredible skill clearly shows, but it's not so in-your-face, nor does it ever become the goal in itself.

RobRadcliffe gave a bunch of albums from 2016 1/10 to try to get them out of the top 20. Can you guys believe a 40 year old did that?

I hadn't enjoyed a Fates Warning record in 25 years (since Parallels), and not for lack of trying. This album is awesome; an excellent blend of strong songwriting and performance both.

Also, as a MUCH bigger fan of John Arch, I have to say Ray's voice has never sounded so good. I'm glad he's forgone the falsetto for real voice, which sounds a million times better to my ears.

That's strange, because 2013's Darkness In A Different Light was really quite good.

Here we go again, another 1 from someone who most likely didn't listen to the album. Downraters are so pathetic.

I heard it and it didn't resonate with me. Maybe I wasn't in the right mood? I'll give it another go on the strength of this latest effort.

Great album, if I could use the half-point I would give this 8.5/10.
Happy to see the whole band in such a good shape.
My favourite song is "The Ghosts Of Home", very close to masterpiece level.

This one is a huge leap forward compared to the previous lackluster Darkness in DIfferent Light. Plenty of hooks and variation in the music.
