Melodic black metal is a growing genre. I'm not an expert on black metal by any means, but I know I prefer these bands to the raw sound of Norweigan Black Metal etc. Melodic black metal often has gothic influences as well, and that's pretty much where my knowledge ends. If you know any other good bands that play like the ones in the poll please post as I'm interested in listening to them!
My favorite out of these would be Dark Fortress, a German (I think) band, my favorite album by them is Stab Wounds. I reccomend them to everyone!
Oh and please keep on topic and try not to turn this into a genre battle.

Dissection definitely was a great band but I tend to think they had a bunch of ok albums and then a masterpiece in "Storm of the Light's bane". So my vote goes for Old Man's Child....Theyve always been better than Dimmu Borgir, perhpaps not during Dimmu's "Puritanical.." phase but definitely in recent years with "In defiance of existence" and "Vermin".

Im of the opinion that Galder always left the best riffs for his own band hehe Not sure about the upcoming album though, the new song sounds outright MEDIOCRE - we'll have to see I guess

Well from a personal view, I like Dissection more than Old Man's Child and Dimmu. The music of dissection have given me quite a few chills down my spine - still do, and had a major impact on me. While Old Man's Child didn't have the same strong effect.

Old Man's Child have definitely been more solid in their releases for sure, and their music is great.
Yeah, I agree about the riffs with Galder. Just took a quick listen with both bands, much more punch in Old Man's Child

But Dissection still gets my vote nevertheless. =)

I'm not gonna vote, becuase I can't really say I know enough about this subgenre myself. But I DO know that it can be very captivating. I'm actually getting into some Dragonlord.....

Funny thing about Dark Fortress though, their name is exactly what Dimmu Borgir translates into in their native language.

Weird...I always thought Dimmu Borgir means Demonic Citizen, but then again Ive also heard it means Foggy Castle (Dark Fortress) lol

I won't vote here, because the list is irrelevent...

- Dimmu Borgir and Cradle Of Filth may be "sellouts" but they are not Melodic BM
- Graveworm is either Black/Goth or Extreme Goth

Dark Fortress!! I was going to vote for Graveworm, but Fortress has been more consistent. They are the kings of melo-black.

I voted for Graveworm.
Most because of the "As the Angel Reach Beauty" album.

It's awesome!

There's Borknagar too, but it's the only heard, so I'll keep my vote for later.

I gave my vote to Rotting Christ, they're one of the best bands out there. I like their whole discography, and they have always been on the melodic side of the BM for me, but with latest album I can imagied they got some new fans due to the *meldodic* part. And well, Theogonia is just superb, that is easly one of the best MB albums out there, even outside the genre one of best albums. So they easily take the throne in this one.

As for the rest (early) Dimmu Borgir can be neat, specially due to Enthrone Darkness Triumphant, but later albums very inconsistent, had some great tracks, but wholesomenly they weren't as great.
I have always considered Graveworom more of an extreme gothic metal, than melodic black. I like some of their stuff, but no nearly enoguh to make them best. Goes some for Dark Dortress. I never liked COF, what a horrible band with horrible music and horrible stage preformance.

I really liked Dimmu Borgir's first album For All Tid a lot. It's epic and chilling.
