I'm putting together a little music quiz and part of it is guessing pop/rock/mainstream songs covered by extreme metal bands. I've only got a couple so far and I'm hoping you can suggest some more. It cannot be clean vocals since that makes it too easy. I'm looking for cookie monster/growl vocals.

Thanks in advance!

 • Ten Masked Men - Cry Me a River (and every other cover song they do)
 • In Flames - Everything Counts

Vader did a good job covering Metallica's - Fight Fire With Fire. I actually like it better than the original.

Someone already mentioned that Disturbed did a cover a few years ago of Genesis' "Land Of Confusion," but no one has yet mentioned that they also covered "Shout" by Tears For Fears on their debut.

Grave covered Them Bones by Alice in Chains. I played that album without knowing they covered that song, and when I first heard it it took me a couple seconds to figure it out, so I think that would be a good choice. The guitar solo totally gives it away though hehe

Best cover ever in my opinion.

I also like the cover of Battery on Ensiferum's "Iron".

Yeah, I think I mentionned it before. Good Times Bad Times is really nice!

Vader is one the best cover bands I've ever heard. There original stuff is decent but their covers are awesome. My favorite is their cover of Thin Lizzy's "Angel of Death". A decent song in it's right but made excellent by Vader.

One of the most ridiculous covers I've ever heard is Children of Bodom doing "(Ghost) Riders In The Sky" which was originally done by an archaic Western band (not Country) called The Sons Of The Pioneers. At least I think they are the original band. Johnny Cash's version is probably more famous.

What about the album Revisionnisme by The CNK? It's all composed by covers, including Leonard Cohen, Beastie Boys, Emperor, Rammstein or Guns'n Roses.

Not a fan of covers generally. But Flotsam and Jetsam's cover of Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting is amazing.

Sort of a plug, but very relevant to the topic.

A couple of friends of mine did a spoof black metal album full of comedy covers. Surprisingly, it sounds really really good, and I'm not just saying that because I know them. Here's the Bandcamp link so you can hear some unusual song choices in black metal form. (specifically, Alice Cooper, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Judas Priest, Cradle of Filth, Game of Thrones, Metallica, Spinal Tap, a Christmas medley, a LOTR medley, The Phantom of the Opera and Iron Maiden)
They're also in a hair metal pop cover band, but that's slightly less relevant. Link to more covers in case anyone cares.

Besides that album, here are some more of my favourites:
Moonsorrow - For Whom the Bell Tolls (Metallica)
Extol - Shadow of Death (Believer) (not sure if this counts)
Xanthochroid - Harvest (Opeth) (again, not sure if this counts)
Raintime - Beat It (Michael Jackson)
Becoming the Archetype - O Holy Night (Christmas carol)
Graveworm - Gangnam Style (PSY) (yes this happened)
Turisas - Rasputin (Boney M)

I love covers, especially covers with a wildly different style to the original, so this is my kind of thread. Browsing with glee.

Yep, Graveworm is a very "active" band when it comes to making covers.
They also did REM's "Losing my Religion", Pet Shop Boys's "It's a Sin", and Bonnye Tyler's "I need a hero", among others..

This Gangnam Style cover was just an "in concert" thing, or was it released officially somewhere?

Also Bykurius sound pretty good. But I don't know many of the songs there =P

As far as I know, just a one-off performance live. But of course, there are loads of videos of it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XF3uUttvW4w

I don't even like any of the bands on the bill, but if I'd had some kind of vision of the future and known that was going to happen, I'd have got a flight to Holland just for that.

That could make the cover interesting at least. Just the thought of a growl saying "come on baby light my fire", or "girl we couldn't get much higher", or "love becomes a funeral pyre" just makes me laugh. Oh well, tastes...
