Agree with the above. Why have genres like black metal when you have the never ending flow of innovation and evolution coming out of the revivalist thrash movement.

Oh wait...

Yeah Restless is epic man ! and you're definitely right about Witchkrieg, I bought it and was kind of pissed that the awesome sound left the band... anyways Im hoping for something better on the next release. Im pretty sure you'll love the other bands.

First wave, easily. Followed by early second wave. Most of the more modern extreme stuff just seems so shitty and dull nowadays, you know. Used to be big into that stuff, but now I just can't stand most of it aside from the odd exception that's sorta ok.

Voted "anything else you can think of", if that wasn't clear.

I really like the atmospheric/ambient black metal myself. It knows how to take you on an "experience" so to speak. Relaxing while still heavy.

Probably Blackgaze. Sure the chart toppers are decent, but the best is finding the more lo-fi, basement bands.

"Anything else black you can think of" as in Venom, the beginning of black metal and an influence on the beginning of thrash. They had a whole album called Black Metal.

influence on thrash certainly
but they don"t have a black sound
the name black metal was adopted from their record, just like the looks of other bands that weren"t black metal were turned into the stereotypical black metal look

Anything that's not atmospheric or ambient. That shit's just dull.
Might choose Viking, Second Wave or Blackened Thrash/Death.

I voted Atmospheric Black Metal. Especially with some Shoegaze added to the mix.

it was hard to decide because I also love Depressive Black Metal as well as Black/Thrash.....those subgenres own!

I think Symphonic Black is the most goddamn overrated subgenre out of all of them, to me there's only like one or two bands from that style that are actually worth listening to

Re. venom. yeah, their sound isn't all that "black" by later standards but they had some moments...

high-contrast monochrome, check
skimpy leather outfits (not band t-shirts), check
spikes, check
unfeasable boots, check
weapons, check
skull, check
power rangers photo pose, check

if their actual music wasn't an influence all that much on Black Metal, their look sure was
