This is a pretty tough question and I do find it interesting to see what we Metalstormers prefer.
If I had to choose between clean vocals or growl I'm certain that I would choose the second option. I am right now into more extreme and heavier metal and that's the reason why I choose growl.

EDIT: Some wish to have a third option which includes both options. I didn't include it because I want a more clear result.

I didnt vote... cozi prefer songs with both kind vocals together in the same song... this creates majesty in the songs; besides, it adds the opportunity to make extra effects within the songs ... for example, Opeth... I will not say anything else ... its enough to say OPETH....

I have nothing against growls, but I will certainly choose clean vocals. I think everyone can growl if he practices it, but not everyone can really sing. Its more artistic, I dont know.... And generally growls combined with clean/spoken usualy sounds atleast interesting, if not very good. Contrasts in Metal music mostly go well together.

Yeah, really! most ppl can growl for maybe 5 seconds, tops... It sure f*cks up the throat more than singing...

Anyhow my favorite is a growl/clean combination, too. I especially love the way Asmegin combines death, black, clean male, and female vox on the same album, so beautiful!!! Also I love the growl/clean combination on Amorphis' Tales from the 1000 lakes.

But when it's one or the other... I couldn't vote... it's very hard to say, it really depends on the type of singing or growling, and on the individual vocalist. I guess my favorite type of vox in general is chanting (as in some viking metal) or operatic style singing (like Tarja).. and I love some individual clean vocalists like Heri Joesen (Tyr) or Pasi Koskinen (Amorphis)... but then again some very high power metal vox tend to annoy me, even though I generally like the genre. With growls it depends too. With some bands the growls sound good and mix very well with the music... but with other bands they are overused and tend to overpower the music, making it all unlistenable...

I voted for Growl voices but I really like both styles in the same song. In doom metal songs it's quite obvious the existence of clean voices - and I like it.

Well, I voted for growls because I just like it more lol, even if singing takes more talent. Growling just takes practicing so you can do it for longer, but in the end anyone can learn to growl for a long time.

I also like vocals that sound like fusions of growling and singing, for example in Testament's album "The Gathering" somtimes the vocalist is singing really low notes but at other times hes growling, but it's not like those really intense death metal growls. I think that's the best.

Clean vocals, definitely. Would Maiden, Priest, Sabbath, etc. be anywhere near as good with growls?

Yeah, what a great argument. No offence intended dude, but would Darkthrone, Morbid Angel and those bands be anywhere near as good with clean vocals?

50% of the Bands that I listen to,growl/shriek, and the other 50% use clean vocals, and I could never be able to choose one away if I had to.

An excellent point, I honestly hadn't considered that.

OK, compromise. If it has clean vocals, it was meant to. If it has growling, it was meant to.

I like both depending on the background music, however I voted for clean because if I'm feeling ill and my head is muggy then growling vocals just irritate me even though quite a few of my favourite songs contain them.

I love alot of growling vocalists but without doubt I'd go for clean voccals, they are able to carry more emotions and expression than growls (though growls are better for fury and anguish) and I love mellodic music. I am more easily irritated by growls if I am int he wrong mood than vice versa.

i would deinately have to agree. Growling (in my opinion) should be used to accent certain parts of a song, but when used as the predominant (or only) vocals in a song, tends to be boring and one dimensional.

since im a vocalist too i can say that growling is for those , who can't sing.
in my band i sing between growl and clean - smth like Grave Digger or Sabaton. Why ? I can't sing propper clean notes , and with added growls i can slip through without any problems...

I like both too but i voted for clean voices. I sure love it when i can understand what they are singing about without having to go read the lyrics. Plus, i find clean voices along with the rest of the instruments much more "beautiful" than someone growling along. Growling voices make me pumped up though. Go figure

I'd vote for both if it was possible..
I like both, but sometimes I indeed do prefer one over the other, depending on mood, background music, even the current time of the day, etc. Though I dislike growling when I can't make out any words from it even if I have the lyrics right in front of me.

I would have say clean vocals, although i like growls too. But in saying that, the singing style both work best when they are used hand in hand, such as in Opeth, My Dying Bride, Moonspell, Tystnaden, Ihashn. They styles contrast eachother so well in these bands

I voted growl. Because i listen most of that kind of music, like Arch Enemy, Ensiferum, Wintersun. But i also like clean when i'm tired of growl i can listen to Iron Maiden, for example.

Hard question, but overall I like clean vocals, I have to admit alot of growlers sound the same to me (mostly in death metal) and I know Im gonna get stoned by the MS tr00 Dm & BM Patrol for this, but I notice alot more uniqueness and variation with clean vocals.

something i enjoy from growled vocals is to hear the variations from vocalist to vocalist... y think that you may not find differences when refering to more brutal or heavuer bands... i mean... disgorge/brodequin...

but the differences between suffocation/dying fetus vocals is interesting

I have to say I prefer growling. If I answered this three or four years ago I would have said otherwise, but ever since I got into extreme metal I've liked growling more and more as time has passed. It's a hard choice in many ways though because comparing clean singing with growled voice is like comparing a flute with a downtuned distorted guitar.

I see vocals as just another instrument. Let's take for example distorted death metal music with growled vocals. In this case the contrast of the vocals with the other instruments is low, the vocals go hand in hand with the music in a perfect blend (and this is of course just a simplification.) Whereas clean vocals tend to have much more contrast to the other instruments in metal music and have an "artificial feel" of different levels appearing in the music. For me this means that there is a greater chance that I'm put off by this higher contrast in comparison. Also, if the clean vocals are bad or even just mediocre "nothing special" kind of vocals, it will get on my nerves much more easily than mediocre or bad growling vocals because of the prominent leveling effect I was talking about.

In simple terms this is how it best works for me:
- Distorted vocals for distorted/dirty music.
- Clean voice for melodic and atmospheric music, or in other words "clean" music.

And while that's what I've come to realize is the general rule (a loose term) for me, I don't think it covers even half of the cases. There are tons of "brutal" distorted music with clean singing that I like, also the other way around. But overall I strongly feel I like growling more because of the power and the instrumental blend it provides for the music it's often used in. It sure as hell took a long time to get used to it, and even longer to acquire the affection I today have.

I see people often saying that all/most growlers sound the same, but I strongly disagree. I thought so too at first but having listened to growling for many years now I can see that there are HUGE differences between growlers. The differences are not as obvious as with clean vocals for obvious reasons and I can understand why it all sounds the same to someone who hasn't listened to growling much.

If you listen to growls as often as I do you'll hear the art and passion coming from it...I would say growls for death metal are well placed on that gender of music, example the voice of terror tardy from Obituary he transmits fury and attitude, also like someone said up there Opeth is a good example that both voices can work good together as a form of melodic death metal. I didn't vote, why? because both are art and free expression. its like saying acoustic guitar vs electric guitar.
