Hej,
yesterday I watched the metallica show at thr "rock am ring" festival in germany live on MTV germany.
I was extremely surprised (a good one), that they played almost only old songs :
Here's the set list :
Creeping Death
Fuel
Wherever I may roam
For whom the bell tolls
Fade to black
Battery
Master of puppets
The thing that should not be
Welcome home (sanatarium)
Disposable heroes
Leper messiah
Orion
Damage inc.
Sad but true
Nothing else matters
One
Entre sandman
Last caress
Seek and destroy

You can see that :
_ except for "fuel", that show could have been played in 1991
_ All of "master of puppets" album is there (After "master of puppets", the song, James said "Master of puppets, 20 years, happy anniversary, Master of puppets, the entire album for you"

Well, so the point of my topic is :
Is metallica coming back the their old days and is there any other sign of it from other shows, or is it just for the 20 years of master of puppets that they played songs which just go well with the 8 songs from "master of puppets" album ?

Well, I wish I was there to see Metallica playing all those songs I love, after all the disappointments of "load", "reload" and "st anger". I felt 10 years younger yesterday !

Ok, I hestitated long enough and finally gave The New Song a chance. And I mean, whoa, after St. Anger or St. Crap as someone refered to it crashed 40% of my heart musculature, The New Song sounds pretty koel. IO agree, it's actually a strange mixture, the beginning is St. Crap style, drums are fairly old Metallica (Ulrich is still the man! ), but overall it's close to the Load/ReLoad era. Which is IMO good, because I never expected Metallica to go back to thrash, but I had hopes to go back to their hard rock style, because honestly, I grew up with Load and ReLoad therefore I find both albums really good (even though nothing can beat RTL and MOP in my eyes!). I just hope it won't happen to me the same as it did with Tristania - they played two really good songs on the concerts and in the end, those were the only good songs that were on the later released album. So yea, I'm still a bit sceptic, but at the same time excited.

i'm as lost as you.

as for metallica comming back? i personnally never liked any new albums by major bands. the first 2 or 3 albums are usually the best by popular bands, and then they start becoming shity....so i highly doubt they would come back. or even if they do, i think they would have lost their touch.

Yeah I agree w/ HeathenBlood,As far as new material goes, they are not interesting to me anymore in the slightst. . To me the last real Metallica album was AJFA. I have no hope of them putting out anything worthy of my CD player ever again.

Well, the "new song" wasnt bad:). Based on these new songs, I think they're going to end up playing like they did during the black album.

They can play, but they made their bigger mistake by leting Jason go so easily, he was their brain after Burton died and without them they can't make anything right, because they are quite stupid, especially Lars

Same here. Metallica has done nothing but gone downhile since their self titled album commonly referred to as "the black album," and even when that album came out I am pretty sure hearing that they lost some fans. Since the whole Napster thing Metallica has shown their true colours, they had the right to complain about being ripped off to a degree, yes they are millionaires and I doubt that Napster hurt them in the slightest (since all the money made by bands in primarily in touring,) but how they acted showed they were pussies. I bought all the Metallica albums over the years up until S&M, but I very rarely ever listen to them, if anything I don't really think I like them anymore, every now and then I enjoy throwing on "And Justice For All..." but it's maybe once or twice a year.

Im glad to see Metallica playing metal again instead of that mainstream bullshit but The New Song just doesnt cut it. Good music and all but James cannot sing.

I'm agree about "The New Song" is a mixture of St, Anger and the old stuff. And I'm agree that "The Other New Song" is the resurrection of Metallica. It's "Kill'em All Pt. II", I think.

The new song is very similar to songs of St. Anger. It's long, modern, but without any good moment. Or, with one: the solo.
The other new song is a bit punkish, but it's also boring.

Well I dunno if they're going to play metal again, but I think the new album will be good anyways. The weak link would be Hetfields vocals I think.

And the lyrics, if what we've seen is anything to tell.

And Ulrich's drumming, of course (like we should expect anything else)

And Kirk isn't what he used to be...

And if they put any bass in it, we'll be doing well!

That said, if they just try and something half-competent that isn't pandering to whatever trend is running in mainstream metal, they should be able to knock it up a peg or two...I liked Load and ReLoad (and for the record, I like Megadeth's Risk, Priest's Turbo and Point of Entry and Maiden's X Factor/Virtual XI - it's not like I'm hard to please!), but I'll definitely download this one before I buy it...just in case
