Motorhead-No sleep 'till hammersmith: Motorhead is the first band, not just metal band but music in general that I got into, No sleep 'till hammersmith was the first album of theres I bought, one of the best live albums ever as well.
Opeth- Still Life: the band/album that got me into death growls. not to mention terrific musicianship
Turisas-Battle Metal: honestly the most interesting band I know about, this band has such a wide variety of instruments and vocals its simply amazing (not to mention it was a $42 import).

I'll add 2 albums to my list:
Slayer Reign in Blood
This is THE Thrash album! It blew my mind when I bought it. Had never really listened to Slayer, but since I was going to their Unholy Alliance I had to buy an album right? I loved it straight away! Slayer soon became one of my favourites, check out my last.fm and my Slayer addiction.
Metallica S&M
Could be the best live album ever, simply beautiful. One of my first albums and my first live album ... at least I think so

Down: II - It just hit me really hard when I got it, and I've always thought it was an amazing piece of work.. especially for being written in 28 days, by a few guys from NOLA locking themselves up in Phils barn/studio and not quiting until the album was done. The album just holds a lot to it musically and the way it feels, and having been to NOLA under very specific circumstances it gives it even more value to me.
Sepultura: Roots and White Zombie: Astro Creep 2000 - These two albums were the first that really got me into metal, I went from all kinds of shitty music, and Nirvana at the age of like 11 to these two metal bands/albums, so they hold a great significants. Plus they hold a lot of memory with my best friend that I've known for 12 years now, and all the shit we've been through.

Iced Earth - Horror Show
Probably my favourite Iced Earth album and the one that really got me into Iced Earth. From the first day that I heard it I have loved it always.
Iron Maiden - Number Of The Beast
It isn't necessarily my favourite Iron Maiden album, but it was the first real heavy metal album that I heard and it's the reason I am listening to metal today. This is what introduced me to the genre and despite that it's not my favourite Iron Maiden album anymore, it still has a lot of meaning to me.
Morbid Angel - Altars of Madness
With heavy metal aside, this was the album that introduced me to the heavier and more brutal sides of metal. When I first started listening to metal, I really didn't like death metal. I was predominately listening to power, heavy and thrash metal. After hearing this classic album though, my dislike for death metal slowly disappeared and I became more open to the more brutal genres such as death metal and black metal.
Megadeth - Rust In Peace
Quite possibly one of my favourite thrash metal albums ever. As well as being a great album, it also holds a lot of memories for me of some older school days, just shouting along to the lyrics in music classes and such. This album, along with Metallica's Ride The Lighting really bring back some good old memories for me with some old friends that I haven't seen in years.

Metallica - Black Album
The very first metal album I've heard, and the one that got me into metal and, later, discovering the previews albums of the band that would be my favorite of all time.. But of course it's not my favorite Metallica cd, not even close..lol
Dream Theater - Metropolis Pt2: Scenes From A Memory
Also my favorite Dream Theater's album. This one means a lot to me.. when I've heard it for the first time I felt that somehow in my subconscious mind there was something connected to it.. I still don't know exactly what is it though. Note that I was never a fan of Dream Theater, and their progressive style never attracted me, but there was something different about this album (instrumentally and lyrically).
Nightwish - Oceanborn
This was the first Nightwish album I've heard and it led me to two of my favorite styles of metal (power and symphonic).
Children of Bodom - Hate Crew Deathroll
It led me to know this great band, the great guitarist Alexi and the Keyboardist Wirmen and also his brilliant solo band Warmen. Not my favorite though.

There are three metal albums that IMO can't be surpass. And in a way these albums transcend metal music. These are:
Ulver - Nattens Madrigal
I love Ulver and I think Nattens Madrigal is their best work, the atmosphere is just glorious. Listening to this alum is kind of liberating experience, it liberates me from myself if that makes any sense.
Gorguts - Obscura
I think that the title is very appropriate for that album, this music sounds like it comes from another world that we belong in without knowning.
Sleep - Dopesmoker/Jerusalem
Maybe even the best one. Like NM and Obscura it manages to transform perception, create a sort of mystical experience.

The album that means the most to me is not metal at all, its something that helped me a lot when i was having troubles, some years ago, its Black Market Music, by Placebo, released in 2003
Versus the Wolrd, by Amon Amarth has also been very important to me, as the songs in it, especially Thousand Years Of Oppression, remind me of someone who meant a lot for me.
The album that really got me into metal was Reise Reise, by Rammstein, before that, i used to listen to some metal, the classics : Metallica, Iron Maiden etc.. time to time, but not as much as now. Reise Reise is maybe not Rammstein's best album, but i will never forget the first time when i played it, the intro of the song Reise Reise, and then Mein Teil, had such a great impact on me. The funniest thing in all this is that ive bought these albums by chance, it was a totally random, when i bought Reise Reise and Black Market Music.
But my favourite album at the moment is Figure Number Five, by soilwork : all the songs are amazing. But i think it will change soon , With Oden On Our Side by Amon Amrth is just great, i think it will take the #1's place soon .

Ok what album mean the most to me... Of my whole collection there is maybe a handful that I couldn't live without these are those albums...
Epica - Consign to Oblivion
Consign to Oblivion for me is the jewel in the crown of my collection, It is my favorite album.
Nightwish - Oceanborn
Oceanborn was my first Nightwish album, and the album which got me into Operatic vocals
My Dying Bride - The Light at the End of the World
The Light at the End of the World is my favorite MDB album with so many memorable songs. It is a calming album for me and a cleansing album.
Opeth - Blackwater Park
Well it is amongst my favorites... Opeth are musical perfection to me. Amazing cd.
Dream Theater - Train of Thought
Dream Theater like opeth are a different type of musical perfection, but nevertheless... perfect.
Within Temptation - Mother Earth
I shouldn't need to say much more the Sharon den Adel for WT fans to understand this albums meaning to me.
Opeth - Still Life
It was my first opeth album and my first death metal album... It is still amongst the best cds i own.
Ihashn - The Adversary
This cd gave me a whole new perspective for a musician I already believed was a genius. This album has led me to buy all emperor and Peccatum albums now. Ihashn is a musical genius with the ability to create darkness with music.

Herm, does it have to be an experiencing metal or a metalhead birth kinda thing? if so, then the rebirth cd is
Sehnsucht by Rammstein <First ever metal that I've been exposed to. Well not really, Iron Maiden was the first ever metal genre that Ive been exposed to and I've been obsessing ever since.
Oceanborn by Nightwish <has made me desire in studying vocal styles of singing and have a desire of becoming a singer.
All of Kalmah's albums make me feel happy. In a way.

Great topic. Well, there are a lot of albums that are dear to me, here are a few:
Fates Warning - A Pleasant Shade of Gray
Iron Maiden - Seventh Son of the Seventh Son
Dream Theater - Awake
Anathema - Alternative 4
Opeth - Damnation
Riverside - both their albums are amazing
Threshold - my favourite progressive metal band, the albums that feature Andrew McDermott on vocals are very dear to me.
Deep Purple - Stormbringer
Toto - Mindfields
Porcupine Tree - another favourite band of mine, I especially enjoy their post 1996 albums
Uriah Heep - Demons and Wizards. I also have a soft spot for the second Uriah Heep era (1976-1979), featuring John Lawton on vocals.
Led Zeppelin - the debut album.
that's all for now.

Dissection - Storm of the Lights Bane
The cold voice of Jon Nodveidt and incredible consistency makes this a mind engraving experience.
Morbid Angel - Covenant
Many memories, and this album gives me alot of motivation too...
Arch Enemy - Wages of Sin
First time I ever heard this album I fell apart, its just great.
Theatre of Tragedy - Velvet Darkness they fear
This album is so old...one of my friends bought it when it first came out, still great conditions, nostalgic I guess.
Death - Symbolic
Flawless music that never ceases to please the ears yet projects the emotion of the fantastic musicianship.
Dismember - Like an Everflowing Stream
Tight album, my favorite melodic DM album of all f***ing time.
Melechesh - Al intisar...as jerusalem burns
This album, also probably purchased around 11 years ago still sounds amazing.

It opened up a whole new genre of metal to me. The sweet acoustic/jazz interludes coupled with death vocals and brutal guitarwork really resonated within me. My CD collection will never be the same.

Sentenced's The Cold White Light:The most pessimistic material i have ever listened. My depressive feelings and that masterpiece intersected exactly.
And then the second one moonspell's wolfheart:An important step for gothic metal. It made a difference and kindness for my gothic music mind.
Slayer's Reign in Blood:No words to add.....................
Anathema's Judgement:Although most of the people say alternative 4 is their best album,to me they signed the peak with this album and the songs contained were very close to my pshycology
Iron Maiden's Number of the beast:teatro alla scala of heavy metal

...And Justice For All - Metallica. The first metal album that I listened to, they would later become one of my favourite bands.
In Flames - The Jester Race. Got me into melodic metal, everything i explored later would be because of this album, it opened doors definately.
My arms, Your hearse - Opeth. First Opeth cd i listened too and my first touch with death growls. It made me love Opeth and get all of their cds and it made me search for some more of those growls in other bands.
Images & words - Dream Theater. Got me into progressive and its a very personal album for me for several reasons.
Shade's Of... - Shape Of Despair. Made me curious about doom metal.

Forgot to mention "Reign In Blood" that made me look at Slayer, a band that I had ignored (for no reason) until then and after I gave it a try enjoyed them a lot. I'm glad i decided to pick this cd and listen to it. This happened a couple of months ago, so its a more recent impact on me but its still an album that means a lot to me cuz it hit me deep. This is related to personal things as well.

I was dapressed for ages, i thought that no wanted me or cared, then someone sent me this album and it changed my life forever, it made me realise you shouldnt' be depressed and sit at home and do nothing, and how even if you have done something you regret it doesnt matter beacuse 'every warrior has a gash on his sword' and how even if you dont belive in religion or follow religion you not gonna go to hell for it "im a sinner, im a heathen, but forever free'
this is the album that changed my life and if i had to have one album in the entire world it would be this one.
