i want to know which female in metal everyone thinks did the most for the genre they cover... i tried to find a thread like this, but couldnt, i hope this isnt a double. i find it realllllly odd that noone ever mentions Rachel Heyzer, who was in sinister and occult. i think she really holds her own among the men of the genre (which are of course plentiful)... so what does everyone think? which female did the most, or is the most talented in your opinion, of your favorite genre??

I really don't think Angela Gossow is really all that influential at all. It was only a matter of time until a female with harsh vocals was going to come along, she just happened to be one of the first (to hit mainstream success). I haven't really heard from any female musicians that matter saying Gossow was their inspiration or anything. Just because you happen to be the first of your gender to do something does not necessarily make you influential.

So ask yourselves, what exactly has Angela Gossow "Influenced"?. I find her to be a pretty generic vocalist, if she had a penis between her legs then I doubt she would be called "influential" at all.

She was the first to hit it big relatively speaking. There were quite a few women grunting before anyone had even heard of Angela.

Corinne v/d Brand in Acrostichon
Rachel Heyzer in both Occult & Sinister
Runhild in Thorr's Hammer
Sibylle in Witches
Dana in Demonic Christ & Mythic
Stephanie in November Grief
Victoria in Damad

Of these I think Corinne would be the first cause she was already doing this stuff all the way back in 1988

to just name a couple and all those bands are way more extreme than Arch Enemy even dare dream to be.

Yeah Sinister has a harsh female vocalist, and I even think that woman is better at growling than Gossow.

The number of women in metal is increasing everyday, but i think it is still too soon to say one woman has been the most influential. But i think that there are a few who deserve a mention.

Doro - See was amongst the earliest of women in metal, great singer and song writer still.
Simone Simons - She is still relatively new to the metal scene but already I have heard of young girls seeking to be like Simone, to sing like her and be in a metal band. But i think time will tell just how influential she will be.
Cadaveria - A bit of a wild card, but thanks to her the door was opened for women to growl screech and sing with the best of metal singers, although lesser know, if it wern't for her localized success many women may never have been able to join more extreme metal bands.
Angela Gassow - I'm not a huge Arch Enemy fan, but it is hard to deny her influence. More and more female singers are now going out and joining metal bands
Morgan Lander - She has knocked down a lot of boundaries for women in metal proving women can and do play guitar as well as a lot of men.

Unfortunately most women I have mentioned and others have been singers few guitarists and even less drummers.

Rachel Heyzer did also vocals for Infinited Hate. I've got their Revel In Bloodshed and that's some sick shit.
I also have the EP from Mythic but almost never listen to it.

On topic: I'm not a big fan, but what Doro did can easily be called influential. She's in metal from begin 80's.

There was this American band called Vixen that I think was influential. I'm just taking a guess because they were playing back in 1980s.

I remember seeing a VH1 special about them and I thought they were cool.

But, probably other bands delivered the goods before them.

Yes, I know Heart, they are quite liked in some scenes. I never explored any of those two bands but I think they might've paved the way.

There are many great female rockers out there today.
Doro Pesch, Lita Ford, Lee Aaron, Joan Jett and Wendy O Williams were 5 female rockers that I think was (and still is) very important for the Metal genre in general. Other "older" bands worth mentioning even if I am not a big fan myself are Girlschool, Vixen and Heart.
I also think that Nightwish & Tarja opened the doors for many other females in Metal.

Very good bass player, imo. I think women can be as great as men when it comes to play instruments.
I just don't like female as vocalists in metal because they don't fit (well, they can fit hard rock or glam bands but this is not metal).

Jo was the only metal/rock female that I saw myself in growing up. She was in that band on merit, not as a "token female" who's only really there to provide "eye candy" for male metal fans. I also wasn't really into the kind of rock/glam type stuff that other girls with instruments seemed to be playing at the time. I was already playing guitar before I discovered Bolt Thrower, but seeing Jo made me realise that there were other females who were really into metal and serious about the musical side of it. I never saw my gender as a barrier to being a musician, and wanting to play metal music. But you definitely do notice, or at least I did back then, how male dominated a world it was.

As you know, I completely agree about female vocalists in metal. Unless the vocals are very harsh, and not distinguishable as female vocals, then they dont fit. At least not to my tastes. lol

Indeed, Jo was never there as eye candy. She doesn't dress sexy and try to get attention with her looks.
Even if, imo, she's not ugly at all. She strikes me as a woman not superficial at all, thus she gains much more respect from me than many others. And her skills are undeniable.
And yes, Bolt Thrower hired her because of her talent as a bass player and not to 'have a chick in the band'.
