I was considering to open this thread in the Metal Arena, but I think that this is not a battle at all, instead, I opened this to see which genre do you consider the hardest to get into, based on your own experience and on what you have heard/read from other people.

I know that many people seem to take a lot to get into progressive metal, for example, and I don't know why, but I supposed it's because this whole experimentation with complex structures and stuff. In the other hand, and based on the number of fans of each band, I can see that doom metal is one of the most "unpopular" (¿?) or the hardest genre to get into for most of the people here in Metal Storm (especially funeral doom).

The genre that has taken me the most to get into is death metal, basically the pure death, technical death and brutal death. I don't know why this happens to me as I don't dislike grunts, and I would say that the only death metal form I appreciate is melo-death (including gothenburg) or death metal fusions with other genres like death/doom or death/prog.

So, what do you think it is the most difficult genre to get in?

I see a lot of bands playin' Doom, Death e.t.c. But I forgot when I saw the last time a band, which plays Classical Heavy. And I thought - maybe it's harder to get in Heavy Metal?

The most difficult genre to get into ?
For me, it's a kind of admixture between brutal death metal and epic vocals....
Doom or progressive metal are more enjoyable.

this is a guitarist point of veiw but composing brutal/technical dm riffs that are balls to the wall and actually
sound great is a hard thing not to mention the phisical strain on the bodies of the people that play such things best composing ive heard is Asmodeus's its just plain evil but thats black metal.

It really depends of the people, but most extreme genres can be difficult to get in, because of their inherent character (i.e., sslllooowww for doom, hateful and raw for black...)

Industrial metal can be difficult at times too (as keeps repeating my girlfriend - I have no such problems)
And strangely, I don't really think that prog is difficult to get into, as it is generally melodic, the complexity just adding another level of perception.

My own difficulties lie in black, drone, but also glam, I just can't stand it.

I think real Black Metal is definitely the hardest because of the unpleasant production

I would say Drone or Black Noise

But for me it would probably be Grindcore.. I just can't Understand how this can be good in any ways.

And I don't really think Black Metal is that hard to get into considering the large number of listeners.

how do you know if it's hard to get in to or you just don't like it? if you know what i mean? personaly i like progressive and technical death metal! but i tried many times to "get into" music that i read everywhere that people love like f.eks. agolloch, i know i understand everything thats going on, becaus it's not hard, but i just don't like it! so i guess i just don't like it!!!
But i know for that many people don't understand odd timesignatures and many other things that goes on in progressive and technical metal, and i feel sorry for them because they don't get the pleasure from hearing this things!!!! so i would say Progresive technical death metal!!!

I found it hard for a while to get into any sort of death metal, but recently I've branched out and began listening to it (I still have a hard time being able to listen to some of the grindcore stuff). I still can't really get myself into black metal though.

i know what you mean. i have a few friends that don't enjoy bands that play in odd time signatures, like meshuggah, strapping young lad, or even tool. they don't understand the patterns. but i do.

Hm, I've gone over most genres lately and came to the conclusion that two of them are very hard for me to get into. Maybe there are other genres which are just as hard to enter, yet I may not have heard of these, hehe.
It would have to be Drone metal and Grindcore. The first is just too weird for me to understand, sloooow stuff and so on... And the second... Even if I do not take it seriously I cannot stand to listen to it, the whole idea of music evaporates here I have the feeling. Most other genres I either love, like or tolerate .

Too bad it's an extension of Punk and not Metal. See: Emotional Hardcore.

I've never tried Drone, personally, so I can't really determine what is the most difficult to subgenre to get into for me yet.

Both of you should read more. "General metal forum" - Presumably, it should be kept to Metal and Metal only, but ah well. Some people can be slack with specifying, true. However, in this case, there shouldn't be an excuse, unless the topic is moved to a non-metal forum

I've never tried drone either. It just don't seem that attractive but I'll let a few albums spin and we'll see what happens.

In terms of getting into a genre... I guess a lot of black metal is one genre a lot of people can't handle.

I agree because its not metal like we use to it, also minimalistic and ambient music are hard , so mix between drone, minimalistic, ambient are so hard to get into

Doom metal
most doom songs are very long and to make it harder the music itself is slow and depressive wich make it hard to get into.

Drone metal
even if you get into the music it still gets boring very fast.

and with black noise I don't even bother, since noise is just crap and not music.
