Continuation of the (at times) great thread by Damnated.

Last thing mentioned was the LLN *sigh, again*, and SVEST.

Nope, people like you killed black metal, simple as that.

No one killed black metal, it's stronger than ever.

A lot of flair and very little substance from Solemn, again. Self-importance ill befits someone with nothing to say. And no, you haven't really said anything. You refused to explain what "neo-liberal" means in a music fan context. And now you mentioned defending "superficial tastes." What exactly is a superficial taste, and what is the distinction between that and a deep, fundamental taste? Forgive me if I'm wrong, but I suspect you're just throwing words left and right without really meaning anything with them.

I know people like you. You want to be critical for the sake of being critical, and revel in a newly-found realization of your own intelligence. Believe me, that's pretty close to how I am. But I try my best to reflect on my thoughts and avoid spiralling into a nose dive like you just have. The moment you got questioned you resorted to crude insults like an uneducated pleb, and you continued to appeal to ad hominens instead of answering any criticism raised at you. Alright, you did assure us that you had knowledge and sources to prove your claim (the truth of which I personally don't care about). But before you could provide links or other proper reference, you conveniently washed your hands of this whole topic.

Looks a lot like you're just trying to save face. I think you'd do that better if you made your case more thoroughly and neutrally, and let it be judged by the merit of your arguments. Right now you're getting judged by your poor manners and bad rhetoric.

Laughing at the so-called defending of superficial tastes, when in fact I find defending old black metal and dissing new black metal way more superficial, because it is the trendy thing to do (diss new black metal)

Exactly. I find it extremely ironic to hear so many elitist black metal fans condemn bands for experimenting and trying new things. These people believe everyone should stick to the same early 90s Norwegian formula. Do they not realise that the same Norwegian style was born out of rebellion against the commercialisation and trendiness of the death metal scene at that time? I can't help but feel that if the same artists were around today they'd be disgusted by all the clone black metal bands trying to be another Darkthrone or Mayhem. There's nothing rebellious about playing the same music as everyone else. If anything I think the true spirit of black metal lives on through people who try to become musical innovators and create something new.

Solemn is not dissing all new black metal or worshiping 2nd wave classics, though. He said that already, and he's a DSO fanboy (as you can see from his extreme metal list). You're talking past eachother. He just said WITTR represent a specific bad movement in BM and are a bunch of douchebags. That's what was contested and that's what he failed to defend.

I would like to see this interview where WITTR laud themselves so lavishly. I'm not doubting it's existence...just requesting a link. From, you know, anyone (Solemn) who might know where to find it...

I know the guys in WITTR quite a bit and we even talked about how they view their black metal and they told me it's nothing innovative and such, it's just that they like playing this sort of black without furthering the sound of black.

Well I think the mentality of "if it ain't broke don't fix it" that he professed to having constitutes as a distaste for anything that deviates from the original sound. But if that's not what he meant then never mind. It's just a strange double standard I've noticed amongst some black metal fans.

Too difficult to get into. The first wave is good, but the second is too boring. Mayhem, Emperor, Gorgoroth... All these bands sounds the same all the way, with the chaotic music and extremely fast drum pace. I am new with the genre, but the only albums that I really got into was "Under The Sign Of The Black Mark" and "Bathory", both from Bathory, and "Filosofem", by Burzum.

Try 'Anthems To The Welkin At Dusk' by Emperor. They're much more symphonic and progressive after their first album.

The drums aren't like satyricon's "mother north", right?

I suggest that you leave the second wave for now. It's quite hard to get into, even though it's the tr00 kvlt necro stuff. Try the third wave before, then try the second wave again. IMO it's the easiest to get into, is the most innovative, has the most varied lyrics (Which are rarely stupid) and, most importantly, has the best atmosphere (If you prefer sadness and melancholy to evil and spine-chilling grim riffs of course).
If you need recommendations, PM me. (BTW I'm sorry for being stupid in your non-metal list.)

Satyricon's Mother North has very, very clear blast-beats. Which might get annoying if not played fast enough and accurate. Take for example Skagos's The Drums Pound Every Night in a Glorious Celebration of Life from their album Ast. The slow blast-beat can get the listened impatient.

Third wave before second? I don't know about that. I started with second and then moved into third. I would say try bands like Dissection and Watain first if you're going from the third wave and moving backwards. They are the most similar in tone and concept to the early bands of the movement but more melodic. I think Burzum would be the best place to start in the second wave. Then Darkthrone and Mayhem.

There's nothing.... wrong. It's just too repetitive and faster than a laser bullet. I like black metal a little more thrash, but not boring as venom.

Wait! There's a third wave? Now I am confused. If the first is the "thrashy" mid 80's and the second is the chaotic 90's, the third is the "Dimmu Borgir" stuff? And of course I love atmosphere in music, "Filosofem" wil be always one of my favorites!

Also, that list was (a bit) metal, and you weren't stupid

Hmm. I sometimes don't like the "ratatatatataatatata" blast beats either, but I actually thought the drumming on that song is a bit different. Although I did re-listen to a few songs on Anthems To The Welkin At Dusk and I didn't hear any of that repetitive drumming. Like I said, it's a more progressive take on black metal and you might like it. Can't really recommend much more than that. At the moment I only listen to the main Norwegian Black Metal bands and they're pretty straightforward pure 2nd wave style so I doubt they'd be your kinda thing. I think that there's a lot of modern Black Metal bands that have moved away from that kind of repetition though. One of my friends linked me a song by Anaal Nathrakh which was refreshingly different.

Can't really recommend much more than that.

Well, my all-time favorite black metal song is "Enter The Eternal Fire", from Bathory's "Under The Sign Of The Black Mark." Well, to say the truth, this is my favorite black metal album (9/10). I just love the atmosphere that the songs create and the difference between Quorthon's shrieks in all the songs. Damn! "Call From The Grave" has awesome vocals. I also enjoy too much the bathory debut. These albums are very fast and agressive, but without that "ratatatatatatatatata" drumming, with much thrash influence and perfect atmosphere. Only Quorthon made awesome black metal music, or I should seek another thing to listen to.

Burzum is good, too. Filosofem has something different, I fell like I am alone while listening to this album, creppy atmosphere. About the older burzum stuff, I like songs like "War" and "Lost Wisdow", but what kill is the parrot vocals

Don't you know anything that fit this passage?

Eventually check black/thrash bands too.

Ah Bathory. I'm actually more into the later viking stuff Quorthon did but yes, he did make some fine black metal.

Okay so you like atmospheric black metal and thrash influenced black metal. Well then I can make some recommendations.

For thrash/black:

Skeleton Witch - Forever Abomination
Immortal - At The Heart Of Winter

Symphonic/Atmospheric Black Metal:

Agalloch - anything really. Ashes Against The Grain is a good album. They're not very black but they have some shrieks and occasionally have blackish riffs.
Summoning - very symphonic black metal that relies heavily on atmosphere. look them up on here for an album recommendation
Burzum - Fallen (his 'parrot' vocals are gone. He uses more clean singing and he's changed his extreme vocals to more of a growl.)

Let's go!

1- Yeah, I'm more into the viking stuff as well, such masterpiece.
2- Skeleton Witch: Gonna Check.
3- Immortal: The guy above recommended me the same, and I will check soon.
4- Aggaloch: Listened this album some days ago. Nothing impressive, just good music, or maybe I need to listen to it again. I remember some good momments.
5- Summoning: Gonna Check.
6- Yeah, I like this one as well. Interesting philosophy.

And I checked some songs from 'Anthems To The Welkin At Dusk'. It's not band. Now I have something new to listen before bed

Thanks, man!

Cuca: you should probably check out some melodic, slightly thrashy modern BM in that case. I'm not an expert, but you would probably enjoy Melechesh and Rudra, both kinda riff oriented with nice production and an ethnic vibe.

For anyone who's interested, I'm beginning a new feature here in the form of an article much like the Clandestine Cuts series we have, only my focus will be solely on underground black metal demos that are Bandcamp-streamed. It's not about voting and I will be running the article without any assistance. Just think of it as another way of introducing people to more obscure music.

The first issue is ready to be published, and will appear on the front page on the first of May. All subsequent series will also be published on the first of each month. Each article will contain six demos that are reviewed by me with links to their respective Bandcamp pages so nobody has an excuse not to listen.

Cheers!
