Already when seeing the coverart and hearing the 34 seconds long intro you'll have a quite solid idea of what this album holds in store for you. Pure epicness. And beginning with the first song, Wingthors Hammer, this epicness gets combined with very fast and solid folk metal.

In fact the only slow songs we got here are the keyboard / folk instruments -only instrumentals (the intro, Heimdalls Ruf, Im Fackelschein and Wald Der Freiheit). As you can see there are quite a number of instrumentals for an album with thirteen tracks. And also in the non-instrumental tracks we have a lot of tranquil, epic and atmospheric instrumental parts replacing the fast-paced drumming and the riffing at frequent intervals.

I probably would have liked itmore if I spoke german or it was in english. The music was great, I just had no idea what the lyrics were.

Highly enjoyable folk metal. Reminds me somewhat of Aephanemer, but this is more folk-oriented and has that funny early 2000's synth all over it.

Considering Equilibrium's more recent shenanigans I decided to revisit the glory days of Turis Fratyr, and besides it isn't often that I can leave a comment about an album that I've given a perfect score to.

After all these years these songs still live in my soul. The writing is flawless and magical with so many layers and complimenting melodies that there is never a dull moment. On an album that is almost an hour long none of it feels wasted, except maybe the very first 30 second title track but that's hardly worth mentioning. Otherwise the ambient/instrumental tracks are just as good as the regular songs. This album is all about presentation which means that atmosphere plays a huge part in it, and the atmosphere is very well crafted. Equilibrium was miles ahead of most of their peers at the time in that regard and let's not forget this was their debut album. For instance the short orchestral ending of Der Sturm is a big part of what makes it feel so alive and sets it apart from its later re-recorded version. The album's production is very clean and I consider the drums to sound perfect in the mix. The structure and flow of the album are impeccable too. You climb until you reach the first summit where Met is waiting for you like a little prize, then you have another peak to climb and the journey becomes even more rewarding the farther you go. The only complaint I often heard that I can agree with is that the vocals are often delivered with a lot of staccato which can be a bit much after a while but I got used to that ages ago.

18 years later, Turis Fratyr has easily withstood the test of time and will always remain a defining moment in folk metal history.

It's apprentice work. They learned from Ensiferum, created their own form and it was beautiful. But the substance was to follow.
