Best Swedish Melodic Death/Gothenburg Metal band
One extremely important piece of the melodic death jigsaw puzzle is the Gothenburg style, named after the city from which it originated. It is not certain what band originally started the Gothenburg sound, but it is widely accepted that In Flames, At the Gates, and Dark Tranquillity are the three major popularizers of the style, and some of the only widely known bands to practice it, with newer bands such as Arch Enemy and The Haunted being offshoots of Carcass and At The Gates respectively. -Wikipedia

Not that you need it tho. Anyways so, which one is it for you? I guess this will end up Amon Amarth being the leader. I don't know maybe because they stayed pure from the beginning but my choice is Dark Tranquillity. They are giving the little signs of turning out like In Flames tho but i follow them!

I prefer Soilwork overall, most people have voted for DT but I personally can't get into much of their music except for 1 album, but I've forgotten what it was called now...

At The Gates of course...in my opinion, they're the originators of the genre, adding the best genre album ever created "Slaughter of the Soul".

I voted for 'other' because my favourite gothenburg band 'Mors Principium Est' isn't in the list. Too bad, 'cause these guys are really awesome. After I listened to their album 'The Unborn', the other gothenburg bands like DT, AE,... seemed old to me, they're still very good, but MPE has put something new into this style of metal. In Flames is also inovating this style, but in a different direction.

I've changed my mind since my last post 14 months ago. Back then I chose In Flames for being an important part of me as a Metalhead. Well, since then I barely listen to them anymore. Today I'd choose Dark Tranquillity, Stanne is an amazing vocalist and they create catchy, wonderful but also very emotional songs.

I dont know what to chose but I really like Dark Tranquillity with there catchy songs but In Flames was the first "band" with harsh vocals i liked so it difficult to chose. I think i would go for In Flames because I will never (!) become tired of there music!

DT all the way, and Amon Amarth should'nt be on there because their the only one that dont fit into the Gothenberg sound, their melodic death.

right now Soilwork and DT. if you wanna say for the Gothenburg sound then Soilwork are the winners, if you want my personal opinion then DT are better (and maybe more melo-Death and not Gothenburg).

Amon Amarth! They really don't fit with this "Gothenburg" genre, but as a Melodic/ Death metal band (Viking, whatever you want to call it), they're a great band! My friend tried getting me into Dark Tranquility and it's just not too interesting to me, I never got into it! I enjoy A.A. style and sound! Great shit!

I voted for Arch Enemy. My explanation for that is the musical experience you can get when you're listening to every single song of them. I love Angela Gossow's voice, but Amott's guitars are awesome. So, I remember the Spiritual Beggars influence in every soft part of their songs. So, I think they've become an important influence for a lot of bands worldwide.

We have clearly 2 different styles there. For gothenburg I'd vote Dark Tranquillity for sure. But for melodic metal Amon Amarth. So I don't really know which one to vote.. :| I guess I'll vote Amon Amarth cause I like every work from them.. DT I only began to listen their latest works.
