I was considering to open this thread in the Metal Arena, but I think that this is not a battle at all, instead, I opened this to see which genre do you consider the hardest to get into, based on your own experience and on what you have heard/read from other people.

I know that many people seem to take a lot to get into progressive metal, for example, and I don't know why, but I supposed it's because this whole experimentation with complex structures and stuff. In the other hand, and based on the number of fans of each band, I can see that doom metal is one of the most "unpopular" (¿?) or the hardest genre to get into for most of the people here in Metal Storm (especially funeral doom).

The genre that has taken me the most to get into is death metal, basically the pure death, technical death and brutal death. I don't know why this happens to me as I don't dislike grunts, and I would say that the only death metal form I appreciate is melo-death (including gothenburg) or death metal fusions with other genres like death/doom or death/prog.

So, what do you think it is the most difficult genre to get in?

How can it be difficult to ''get into'' music (any genre) as long as you like it...?If you don't,you just don't get into it.Is there a law, that forces you to ''get into'' bm,or dm or grindcore etc? I believe that if a person is interested in certain genres of metal,or music in general it won't be difficult at all.

I disagree.
You see, I'm into melodic metal mostly. Gradually I got into some extreme bands, like In Flames (newer stuff) and Dimmu Borgir. Not like "I'm going to get into black metal!" and paff, magic. And I'm currently getting into Cattle Decapitation....
It can be and it is difficult because spite some bands might call your attention you must get accustomed to teh new sound, at least in my case. I'm still getting into Cattle Decapitation, I'm not used to grind...
So it can be difficult to get in some genres, meaning that you have to get accustomed to something new and different from what you usually listen to...

Black metal, or grindcore. When you first hear black metal, it sounds like static, but now I think it's freakin' amasing. As for grindcore, I'm still getting into it. I'm starting to like Kataklysm a lot.....

As me concerned about metal genres, I find doom metal the most difficult to get into it. Don't know why, but I still haven't give up listen to this staff...

MetalCore is a @#$!@%@%!~~!!! we are talking about genres that are difficult to get in to, not the !@#%!!^~!!@ music on earth! sorry if someone likes it! I hate it that's all... it reminds me those EMO's which I hate too....

I agree, is diffucult to get use to Prog metal... but we can compare a lot of bands, like every genre there are terrible and great bands, most of the people like the headbanging and not all progressive music is going to offer you that option lol, they are great musicians doing what they know to do and that's it!

If you know about music you will really appreciate what you are listening too, Arch Enemy and Flower Kings are 2 of my fav bands, and they are totally different.

Folk metal IMO.. at least in my case. I've been trying to get into Folk for months now and most known bands for me are the worst.. Ensiferum, Finntroll and Korpiklaani have great instrumental parts, but when they open their mouths it's all ruined! lol Maybe because I don't like black metal influenced bands, dunno. Eluveitie, for example, I like because it's gothenburg.
I really love the "pure" folk and the only ones that I like is Lumsk, Arkona and maybe Cruachan...
Maybe it's not about folk, but black, I don't know. All I know is I can't stand most popular "folk" bands.

Also, from what I see in others, Power is a bit difficult to get into. Not my case though.

I'd say raw Black Metal, just because it can sound like a bunch of noise if you're not used to it. I know that's what I thought about Mayhem the first few times i listened to them.

Most Black Metal is difficult for me to get into.

That said, I am not a slave (pro or con) to specific genres. If the band/artist is doing something that is original and interesting, then regardless of genre I would be able to get into it. Similarly, even though I am really into Death and Thrash, there are some bands that seem to be just putting together the conventions of those particular styles, and the music does nothing for me.

i think grindcore/tr00 black metal is really hard to get into. this is especially true when the music has really random time changes. and if bestial, guttural vocals arent your thing, stay away.

can you work on industrial projects? i think industrial fusion genres are the most hard genres to play. you would be so great that can do death industrial or black industrial metal songs

Yay, its one of high-ranked bands in my favorite list. and i would say that Aborym's music is one of the hardest music. they are mixing black metal and industrial music well. that you can feel both genres well.

Woow, I completely agree with this quote. This might be a bit off-topic but like you said, Mood is way more important... I take Sepultura as an example... I prefer the first two albums over Arise or Beneath The Remains... The feeling is so good for me.
And well.. about technical Thrash.. yeah, I don't like it that much, it's indeed something hard to get into.

You're not alone in this world.. I don't understand why PM is so good...
Dream Theater for example... it's very overrated IMO... And like you said, boring as hell.

^^ prog nowadays is just boring technical metal with occasionally really bad vocals. prog rock, on the other hand, is good.

Ganz genau! RIGHT! Thrash isn't too much of my thing these days. However, I'll admit when I was first getting into death metal and black metal it was a bit heavy. I never listened to my own music (always my parents) until I was about 14. My friend made me a mix CD (Metallica, Korn, Disturbed, whatever). It was the first I had heard and then it got better when another friend made me a short CD with "Born in a Burial Gown". That was my first sign of wanting heavier and darker shit. When I finally had my first listen to Mayhem's DMDS I couldn't stand his vocals.

Just give it time, really. Sometimes you don't know what a classic it is until you come back to it. I put that DMDS down and a few months later I listened to it again and got it!

Drone metal... If you have not pacience... this genre isn't for you. As simple as that.

even if you have patience, it's not worth it - for me drone is always an useless genre, especially if you like ambient.

I agree with you that prog metal is boring, still I wil recommend Devin Townsend since he concentraits more on atmosphere then being an techinical jackass band such as Dream Theater.

I also find Thrash metal hard to really enjoy, it gets boring fast after the first 4 songs.
