While a lot of people are saying SOAD helped them get into metal, I started listening to them well after I got into metal, basically after I got past the "only tr00 metal" phase and stopped dismissing them as maintream nu metal shit. I got my brother into a lot of music, but SOAD is the only band he got me into and probably the only band we both we love. I'm pretty sure part, if not all, of the reason why people classify them as nu metal is because they have no idea what else to consider them... or maybe because they happen to be pretty mainstream.

Well you may call it alternative metal as well, but i don't see why is wrong to call them nu metal, the only thing is that "nu metal" seem to have a negative connotation, specially when you compare it to other metal styles, but there is nothing wrong with nu metal, and nu metal isn't a very estric category, so it's normal that soad fit in.

System of a down is not nu metal
Why they aren't nu metal in my opinion:
1) they don't have a DJ
2) They dont use rap on their songs or dress like someone in the ghetto
3) They dont sing about "the pain inside" and they dont express that they want theyre fans to "rebel"
4) They have guitar solos
5) They sound nothing like Slipknot, Korn, and Limp Bizkit (think about distortions)
6) They have some folk/arabian influence on their songs
7) Most of theyre songs are either political (deer dance) or just non-sense (bounce)

I don't know if it' just me, but I'm pretty sure any metal band that has mainstream success but isn't really popular or respected among most true metalheads gets the "mallcore" label slapped on them... I don't consider it a genre as much as a rather derogatory adjective, though some people on Urban Dictionary seemed to think otherwise last time I checked...

Well your theory makes sense to me. It's all about respect within the metal community. That's why Slipknot and Korn get tagged as mallcore (because it's easy to hate on nu metal) even though other popular metal bands like Maiden and Opeth are still "true".

Pretty much everything said in the first post applies to me. They were responsible for getting me into metal, I love Serj's voice, and their self-titled debut is my favorite realease from them.

I don't really like them at all. I never really did and then when I heard their failure to cover Black Sabbath's Snowblind, one of my favourite Sabbath songs, I swept them into the garbage can of bands I don't care about and will never spend the time to further get into.

I remember playing Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4 and I heard the track "Shimmy" from Toxicity, which had just come out around that time, during the game, and I thought it was awesome, I still do. The game itself was fun, and the soundtrack I thought was really cool as a little kid. That was probably one of my very first exposures to metal music before I even realized it, fun times.

"Question!" is 3 minutes of insanity I'll never forget. A bipolar recording if there ever was one, sounds very emotive on the one hand then turns on its head and sounds completely outlandish. One of my favourite songs.

Then you haven't checked "Violent Pornography"[3.55]. It's one hell of crazy-ass song.

Pretty catchy one as well. Question!, Violent Pornography and BYOB are the better ones from the Mezmerize record.

I like System of a Down. They may not be the best out there, but they're fucking weird, and that's interesting to me. I'm attracted to the atypical. Don't read that as non-mainstream, a lot of mainstream stuff may end up being crap, but some things become mainstream because they have some genuinely attractive qualities to them. I have no problem with the mainstream, as long as it's got something original and authentic in it.
With System of a Down, it's not some churned-out, mass-produced, Chinese-factory quality shit, it's something that was made as a pure expression of the band member's worries for the world, and it's got a psychotic, strange flavor to it. It may be pretty famous, but there's nothing inherently wrong with that. It's still decent stuff.

yes, i consider this band to be thoroughly enjoyable, pretty psychotic in their innovative records and fun to listen their albums everytime I give a hell amount of spins. I think i'll never ever be getting fucking bored from this band considering they constantly get bashed from some chauvinist metalheads. I remember dropping in their awesome show in 2002 and it was pretty amusing to see these guys get jumped like fucking ninjas or something and doing some ass shifts dances on stage to cheer the naked crowds. It was one hell of a great fucking show. Well, SOAD will be my always interesting band to listen their records.

This is the weirdest band I've ever listened to, and I love everything about them! They write crazy music about crazy things and they don't stick to any one style. Their albums have always been a big "fuck you" to the record industry, where label execs like everyone to sound the same so they have a guaranteed audience. Well look what these guys did! They go out there and do their own thing and end up with their own huge fanbase! Obviously the record labels aren't 100% right when it comes to "fitting in!"

System of a down went mainstream during the time when nu metal was all the rage. That's why a lot of peoples label then as Nu Metal.
But doesn't matter their genre. It's great music for my ears.

Yes, but their first 3 albums has a strong tag of "Alternative Metal"( ugh, overused genre is always attached with this band). However, their best records fall under when nu-metal scene was groundbreaking, that's the only reason SOAD still has a nu-metal tag to it.

I wouldn't call them Alternative Metal as well. They're much more diverse when compared to Alternative Metal acts from the late 90's/early 2000. It's so nice when the band can't be labeled easily

So are Tool, but they're still labeled as Alternative.

Can't ever get enough of them, their music style is def. one of a kind as far as Rock goes and the Armenian twist they add is bad ass as well. Always makes me drive fast on daily commutes to and from work equaling a speeding here and there. : )

Hey, a System of a Down thread! I've actually enjoyed their music immensely, alongside Helmet and Faith No More. Definitely great bands in the Alternative Metal genre.
Having said that, Toxicity is the only album I have of theirs. Great stuff, though. I've always found their prominent Middle Eastern influences to among the most interesting aspects of their music. Doesn't hurt that their music doesn't have boring Power Chords over and over again, not to mention that there's no half baked attempts at blending different genres together and mashing them together.

Today i listened the first time to the entire Toxicity album after 3 years or so and it still sounds awesome. This and their debut are easily their best. After that they became just boring. Mesmerize being average with a few good songs and Hypnotize being a piece of crap in my books. Despite all this, they are talented with a great vocalist.
I still think 'Steal This Album' stands up pretty well. I don't think it holds together as an album as well as the two before it but taking it on individual songs I find myself going back to it a lot to listen to much of it for the general catchiness and atmosphere.
