This album kills. It sounds like colors, but a bit more organized. Colors seemed like they were trying to be experimental, but just sounded like a random mishmash of genres coming together. Here, they went about it again, and pulled it off very well.

I agree with you, but you seem to be seeing Colors in a negative light. I still think that Color's is BTBAM's best album.

I already said why I don't like colours, so it doesn't need further explanation. Sure it's a good album, but alaska is still my favourite from these guys.

I didn't bother to check this out until today, because I was really disappointed with Colors and sorta lost interest with the band, but this album really surprised me. It's more direct, less random, and the long instrumental towards the end of the album blew me away.

They remind of Cynic a lot, here and there in this album. I wonder if they are an inspiration for them? Anyway, they certainly go there.

Given that I don't like the way this vocalist screams I was pleasantly surprised by this album. Good stuff. Second half of 'Disease, Injury, Madness' is amazing

This is a lot more focused than Colors. If they keep getting better with each release, their next album should be pretty awesome. =3

This album is a step down from 'Colors'. 'Colors' flowed and had purpose, this one seems lost and misguided. The first track proves this: as it starts out, i'm thinking, "Yes, here it comes! ..." but then they drag the boring riff out and the flow was gone. I felt like this about most of the album. Of course, technically speaking they still killed it.

After listening to "Colors" back in 2007 I fell in love with this band's music, which was surprising considering my general dislike towards metalcore. But to me the music of Between The Buried And Me seemed to be more progressive than metalcore that's why I really enjoyed it.
This album didn't disappoint me either. While it didn't strike me as hard as "Colors" after the initial listen, I was able to appreciate its attractive points after some time. At times the music on "The Great Misdirect" reminds me of Cynic, at times - of Opeth and clean vocals on "Swim to the Moon" even remind me of Enslaved. Those are all my favourite bands so, I guess, it's another reason for me liking this album.

I think I like this album even more than Colors, but then again only slightly. Great follow-up!

It's growing on me. The drums in particular is what I like; Blake Richardson is sorely underrated as a drummer, if the lack of attention he gets seems to be true.

Infectious rhythms, mesmerizing leads, calming cleans and a sprinkle of cowbell. Yep it's all here, culminating in a voluptuous modern prog classic. Yet it's still not as good as Colors, WTF right?

I love this one far more than Colors - probably because it's twice as melodic and bereft of those stale "heavy" parts that BtBaM are so fond of writing

I can definitely understand where you're coming from, this album is tight. Colors just impresses me more, I'm not exactly sure why. Maybe because it is a single mammoth entity or because it has enough creative energy to blow up a small planet.

Anyone who says this is better than Colors is a few colors short of a rainbow themselves.
Sure, this album is good, but it's not "Colors good." Too disjointed, too much melodicness and too many times killing what could've been a good flow, unlike Colors which feels absolutely seamless. It does sound focused, but that takes away from the charm of BTBAM's music.

If there's anything Colors is not, it's seamless. At least in my opinion. Those tasteless "heavy" parts tarnish any flow the album could have had. Not denying that it's a great record, it's just doesn't match this album in terms of songwriting quality. This album progs from start to finish, so if that's not your thing I could see how you'd prefer the aggression packed in Colors.

Actually, the why I believe Colors is better than this album because it has a perfect blend of both, as you ridiculously put it, "tasteless heavy parts" and melodious parts as opposed to this album. The flow is also much better. To be frank, aside from the flow, production, and musicianship, the heavy parts of Colors is what make Colors better than this album, since both benefit in Colors, as opposed to this album focusing on just the melodic parts, which is not BTBAM's forte.

I wouldn't say that my description was ridiculous given that a few people agree with me In my opinion, BtBaM's forte is their capacity for groove and melody, as demonstrated on Coma Ecliptic, which was - if I'm not mistaken - entirely bereft of those "tasteless heavy parts" and their best work to date.

Which is exactly why it's not as good as Colors. It's better than The Great Misdirect, though, that's for sure, if for just quality-wise. Maybe I was exaggerating a bit when I said melody wasn't their forte, but while the heavier aspect of their music is still much better, I wouldn't appreciate a BTBAM album that focused strictly on the heavy aspect. It's fantastic when they achieve a balance between it and the melodious parts like they do on Colors and even the Parallax Twins (also better). It's not as apparent here, but still prevalent, and it's very obvious on the newest one, which, though it was good, it was just way too sugary. It doesn't work for the band.

I'm all for aggressive, but in all honesty it seems like most of BtBaM's "heavy" riffs are poor in terms of composition. If you just want to feel pure aggression and don't care much for composition then I can see how you'd like their heaviness in contrast to their proggy and melodic side. In any case, it seems this discussion is moot at this point as we've concluded that you like their "heavier" parts, whereas I don't
Edit: I also forgot to mention that it's odd that you consider the heavier parts of their Parallax EP to be of the same caliber as their usual "heavy" style. That is the one release where I feel they actually put some thought into the heavier parts and a few people agree with me in that respect.

3) Colors
