In the latest of the 80's Skid Row released their same titled debut album. A kind of typical american hard rock, but rather the street poet side of it. This must be one of the best records of that time and genre.

Equally strong fast rocking songs and moody ballads stand under the flag of talented musicians, nice rock 'n roll riffs and melodies, all in all outstanding work that doesn't get boring (almost). The genre must have already seemed blasé when 'Skid Row' was released with bands like Tesla, Dokken, Alcatrazz, Bon Jovi, Guns N Roses, Twisted Sister etc. being on the scene for long, but this piece of music accompanied by the remarkable voice of Sebastian Bach gave a boost into the whole thing again. This can be confirmed by the 5 million copies sold that rewarded the efforts put into this album.

Well it is essentially a Glam Metal album.

Slave To The Grind upped the ante and quality considerably.

This is one of those rare albums though, which can legitimately be called "glam metal". Most glam bands who were labelled as metal definitely didn't play it. Whilst it's successor was a heavier album, this one certainly contains metal within it.

I don't know really how people relate this album to glam metal, it sounds very obviously just hard rock and heavy metal, even a recent fan of metal can easily distinguish it I think.
BTW, the whole album sounds so cool, rarely I hear something close to these two first albums of Skid Row by new bands with the same style.

I agree - it was probably just their glam, pretty-boy look. The second album (from memory - haven't listened to it for at least 20 years) was quite heavy. Might have to dig it out and have a listen again and reminisce about my younger days when life was so much more innocent.

Because the term "glam" refers entirely to a band's image, rather than the music they play. If Poison for example, looked like Iron Maiden, but played the exactly same Poison music, they would not be reffered to as glam. As Ace said, Skid Row had the "glam" tag, because of how they looked. That's why it's glam rock, or glam metal. The glam refers to the image, and the rock (or metal) part refers to the music. Glam is not a musical style, it's an image. Poison and other such bands would be simply pop-rock, or cock rock, if they didn't have the glam look.

Samev with Guns N Roses who were really just a hard rock band. But due to image they were part of the glam scene.

Still better than grunge which seems mainly geographically defined (Seattle). Any band in that area got tagged with Grunge title regardless of their sound (e.g. Soundgarden).

Absolutely correct, and I was going to mention Guns n' Roses too. They did not play the same style of music as Poison, but because they had a glam look in their early days, they were lumped in as part of the glam scene.

Spot on about grunge too. I think that was why Stone Temple Pilots were called grunge "copycats". It was simply because they weren't from Seattle. A lot of the grunge bands did not sound like each other, so I always saw it as an inappropriate label for a musical style.

"Here I Am", "Makin' A Mess" are some of the songs that don't need to be on the album. The gems "18 & Life", "Youth Gone Wild", "I Remember You" & " Midnight/Tornade" make up for the 3 filler sings on this album. "Big Guns" is a fun song as well.

Very good classic heavy metal / hair metal / rock album and I like it

I would not call them "hair metal", not even glam, they did not have the Poison, Bon Jovi or Motlley Crue look or sound. The genre tags for Skid Row here are accurate.

Hair metal is a derogatory term. Sure, those musicians looked ridiculous, but then again, it was the 80s...

They shared the same stages as all those bands though. The term sleaze was bandied around quite a bit when Guns and Faster Pussycat first broke and that probably fits slightly better.

Maybe, I'm not sure what the sleaze rock/metal refers to, some say the lyrical content, some say the life-style of those musicians (the whole sex, drugs & rock'n'roll lifestyle), or even both. Also the guitar riffs in those bands sounded raw and dirty (for lack of a better word), the vocals a bit grittier.
