Wow, Catch 33 has a lower rating than Obzen. I find that baffling. This is probably Meshuggah's most accomplished release.

It's really hard to top Nothing and Destroy Erase Improve. At the end of the day, this works well as a long song with many segments, but some segments are just plain boring when separated from the whole. As well, I'm sure the drum machine pissed some people off (not me, but others). Some excellent experiments (Mind's Mirrors and Shed), but most agree that this album is far from being "Meshuggah's most accomplished release."

Not on this page they don't apparently, or on MA where it has the highest aggregate of people who took the time to review it, or in Terrorizer magazine who awarded it album of the year... etc. Just sayin', there's definitely a precedent for most accomplished record here, particularly as to how well such an experimental and difficult record has been received.
And why would you listen to the songs "separated from the whole" when it's supposed to be regarded as one song? You wouldn't skip partway through a 5 minute song and pick out a minute's worth and judge that, you'd regard the song as a whole. A few minor lulls in the record doesn't diminish it enough for me to think of it as anything less than one of the most successful experiments in metal.
And I've never heard a single person complain about the drum machine, ever. Because I seriously doubt anyone would ever know it's a drum machine if they hadn't been told beforehand. People have an annoying assumption that a drum machine is something to complain about. Not when it's done right like on here, Agoraphobic Nosebleed, Blut aus Nord etc.

Believe it or not, some of the best concept albums I have listened to are both excellent as a whole and have excellent songs that comprise it (ie Kalisia, King Crimson, Genesis, etc.). While that's not what Meshuggah is doing here (putting 1 minute segments-ish to form a large song whole), I still feel Meshuggah songs (in this case, segments of the song Catch-33) are better when they are more full-fledged. As a result, a couple of their experiments feel a little half-baked to me. Even if you take a couple segments as a whole, it feels like Meshuggah move too quickly and fail to let some of their experiments develop fully(aside from a few spots like Shed and Mind's Mirrors). It's an interesting experiment, yes, but I also found enough minor lulls compared to Nothing or DEI to really distract my listening.
Well, I immediately noticed the difference in drums on this record compared to Nothing and I. That's not to say I knew it was a drum machine: I didn't. But it certainly prompted me to compare drums in the booklets of the last few Meshuggah records. I wasn't against a drum machine, but it does lack the passion that Haake has when he plays in person (which was very well captured on the next record Obzen). For the most part it is done right and it is very proficient, as you say, but at points it is extremely boring.

Fantastic album but still give a green flag to " Destroy Erase Improve" for their best work.

One of my favorite albums of all time. This album has been very inspirational to me. It took quite some time (and many listens) before my mind began to wrap around this one, but once I got it...I got it. The first three tracks are beautifuly mezmerizing. 'Shed' is amazing; a track from the future sent to show us what true power sounds like. 'In Death is Death' and 'In Death is Life' are wonderful, sister songs. Overall, I highly recommend this album. If you're contemplating buying it, know that it may take some time to sink in. But once it sinks in, you'll be glad.

It's an OK album. Maybe I'm not mature enough to enjoy it, I don't know. I find the small variations through the album very intriguing, but at the end of the day, it's not enough to make me want to listen to it again. Also, I miss the lack of speed.

Kidman's vocals on this are unreal, I wish there was studio footage of him recording vocals for this. There are some unforgettable moments on this album, my personal favourites are the solo at 1:03 on Entrapment and the riff at 2:10 on Dehumanization, how the hell do a bunch a humans create such madness?

Since I saw them live playing the Mind's Mirrors/In Death - Is Life/In Death - Is Death combo I have a newfound love for this album. Can't decide if their best album is Nothing or this one.

Absolutely stunning album, Meshuggah have proved that they don't necessarily need speed to impress. Great atmosphere especially with Mind's Mirrors, In Death - Is Life, In Death - Is Death.

Amazing album! Probably their most hypnotic release.
