Saturnus had been a really important doom/death metal band in the 90s, having a distinctive sound once you had listened to them, but sadly fate seemed to have some other plans instead of letting them become great. They disbanded, but now they are back with a new and strong line-up that can do miracles on stage (you got my word for this!). "Veronika Decides To Die" is the title of their long-awaited third full-length album after a small but very promising tour that hopefully passed from Greece, Athens, and allow me to say that it is a really dynamic and deeply promising come back which places Saturnus back to the throne of withered roses and failed romance they had left behind.

How can you compare this vs oprth

I am talking simply about the atmosphere and melancholy which is what Opeth were trying to go for on Blackwater Park and stating that this is exactly how you create melancholy and atmosphere. Blackwater Park is an album I consider utter garbage so i tend to use it as a reference point to anything i listen to.

After struggling for quite some time as to which is my favourite Saturnus album -- since indeed they released quite some top quality material -- I guess I have come to a quite solid feeling that it is this album.
It is their only album that has only very rarely those moments where they are sort of losing me lingering out some over-long songs (here only present at Decending and maybe a little bit at All Alone for me).
Paradise follows closely as my second-favourite of their albums, with significantly more lingering.
Then comes Martyre and after quite some gap it is Saturn.
Will we have another Saturnus album one day?

Such beautifully constucted melodies, and such an array of quality instrumentation, from these masterful musicians of course the best doom metal album ever imho anyway

This is one of the first Gothic Metal albums I'd ever listened to (thanks to MS top 200 albums). I found the vocals to be quite strange, almost moan-like, and the music slow and drawn-out. It took me a bit of time to appreciate this style, but now I think this album is great! A beautiful and poetic collection of songs.

8.9/10 for me - 'I Long' and 'All Alone' are the standout songs. 'Pretend', 'Rain Wash Me' and 'Embraced by Darkness' are also all great. 'Murky Waters' is the weakest song on the album.

That's strange, this album got my attention only when this song came on. Probably need at least 3 more listens to appreciate it more.

'Murky Waters' is the weakest song on the album.

I guess for me that is rather All Alone. But Murky Waters is probably second.

I love this record! So haunting, so mellifluous, so... (wishing for proper words!). The first 4 tracks are amongst the best I have ever heard! Even the upbeat part of Pretend is well-placed and, hell, well-written. It starts with a catchy, playful rhythm, but then transcends up (descends down, depending on you see which half of the cup) to a calm, melancholic sense of coping with terms: It's only pretense---sad as it is!
And then, WOW, the sweet tracks Descending and Rain Wash Me with the former's out-of-this-world guitar solo and the latter's simple but apocalyptic piano sections (worthy of the track's title and theme)!!!

The next three tracks are not on par IMO. In particular, I tried so damn hard to appreciate All Alone as others suggest, but I find the piano melody too simple and uninteresting. Even though Embraced By Darkness has very nice lyrics, and, To The Dreams has the heaviest riffs throughout the album, they are not that memorable.

The Murky Waters is fantastic! I believe one reason why some might dislike it is that such an album with its melancholic atmosphere shouldn't culminate in an upbeat tune as this track has! But for me, the guitar work is just so catchy that I cannot stay mad about it.

I`m kind of glad I didn`t commented on this thread when the album came out as it could have lead me to some serious bans being a young hot head and trying to prove that this is the best album ever. But even after so many years I keep coming back to this and for my taste - this is something beyond music. This the masterpeice of masterpieces.

The nostalgy, melancholy, romance in these songs are unmatched. I can understand that some people can even find this cheesy, especially those who are into more extreme metal. But for me this stood the test of time.

The balance between piano, bass and those soul crushing solo`s is perfect. But most imporantly it has the song that for me is one of those rare song in all the music, not only metal, that I can call songs of my life. "Descending" - when It came out and I was only a teenager and I said I would like this to be played at my funeral. Now I`m nearing a middle age crisis, but I`m still thinking the same.

I can not think of more beautiful song than that. Thank you Saturnus for this masterpiece.

I remember first learning about Saturnus from a local metal forum I frequented at the time (mostly to keep up with the new releases and upcoming live shows). Well, "learning" is a bit of an overstatement, since I just kept seeing posts from a single fan who kept begging organizers of our local doom festival (Doom Over Kyiv, which I visited regularly despite not being much into doom in general) to bring Saturnus. I just chuckled without paying it much attention - until these organizers actually decided to invite them to the next festival. So, naturally, I decided to at least acquaint myself a little with their music...

My first impression was: "What the hell is this band?! They don't have a single normal song - only awesome ones!". Veronika Decides to Die was their latest at the moment. Man am I still glad someone listened to that single fan...

I Long and Descending are absolute masterpieces.
