After a too long waiting of eight years, the oriental sun is finally shining again on your heads. My friends one of the most innovative and fantastic band from Israel is back with a new album that we can already call legend. Forget everything you know about genres. I'm used of talking about the sound of a band at the beginning of a review. But this album can't be described just by mere genre definitions. They are said to play a mixture of Progressive Death Metal with Arabic folk. But, what exactly is Progressive Death? It sounds like Death? Opeth? Orphaned Land sounds, at it's core, like Progressive Metal, with unusual song structures, technical use of instruments, and no choruses at all. Add to that a constant use of Arabic folk music, with male and female chanting, use of local instruments and riffing that resembles their music. Then add that minimal death mixture, used as some growling, which doesn't stop the beauty of the album, and the sound of some riffs, making them extremely thick and heavy. Read more ›› |

Reminds me of early Solefald with some folk elements...which is not a good thing.

Caught them last night on the Mabool 10th anniversary tour - played almost the entire album (out of sequence) and reminded me of just what a fantastic piece of work this is. It must be one of the most cohesive meshes of metal and folk styles achieved yet

This is a great album but it is the classic example of desception due to overly high praising of it. Maybe i was expecting too much since i started listening to it.

Good, original, has the oriental vibe but definitely overrated. The vocalist is not a good one, at least back then. He sings some false notes and doesn't have consistent melodies, specially live, he's horrible. The musicians are pretty good but nothing spectacular that another tier one prog band doesn't possess. Let's not delve far, just look at the top albums of 2004: http://metalstorm.net/bands/albums_top.php?album_year=2004 Angra - Temple Of Shadows is rated a little lower but to me that's a joke. I totally respect different opinions and tastes, but TOS and Angra were superior to this band in every aspect in 2004. I consider TOS the best album ever made not because I am an Angra fan but I really think it's superior and even incomparable.

Some beautiful tracks on this thing. The concept as a whole is also pretty cool, even as an atheist I could appreciate it. This is also the longest title on the Top 200 Albums list.

IMHO the old Death records are way better then their last ones and I as a musician myself know quite well that the latest were technically at a significantly higher level. Or even more primitive: I would always prefer to listen to a Sum41 record then to one of Dream Theater or Opeth. This is a entertaining record with a common thread and nearly no fillers. IMHO their 2010 and later records are better though. Faves: Birth Of The Three (The Unification), Ocean Land (The Revelation), Halo Dies (The Wrath Of God), A Call To Awake (The Quest), Norra El Norra (Entering The Ark) and The Storm Still Rages Inside
