Whatever cultural stereotypes come to mind when thinking of Finland and its inhabitants, consider them amplified tenfold and caked in rancid reindeer offal to get a better idea of what Cannibal Accident represent musically.
From the outset, Nekrokluster greets the listener with an immense and frenetic pace, ripping along with that familiar old school Finnish death metal grit and grime, momentarily giving pause for the explicit purpose of infusing some chunky groove into the otherwise headache-inducing concoction of sonic chaos. It may not be a groundbreaking approach, but it's certainly capable of punching holes through your skull as your futile efforts to maintain headbanging at these speeds highlight the precise reasons your parents still regret ever cursing their relationship -- and the world -- with your existence. Relatively speaking, it's technically and melodically subdued compared to most of their peers in the scene these days, but the revivalist attitude permeates throughout the album, establishing a nostalgic atmosphere based in the genre's formative years.
Now, this brutal deathgrind style definitely caters to a particular audience, unapologetic in its raw delivery and buzzing repetition, and so the majority of curious newcomers likely won't discover many aspects that prove enticing, but fans and followers should have their appetite satiated with this latest offering despite the crisp mastering and overall polished production values provided courtesy of Time to Kill Records funding. What hasn't changed, of course, is the band's original core value of creating the kind of grind you throw down to, with riffs and licks designed specifically to pump up shoulder-to-shoulder crowds at the local small town dive bar on a Thursday night after the amateur open mic session finally wraps up and tucks tail to bed in preparation for another early morning. The crunching guitars and blasting drums bludgeon their way to the top of the mix as the vocal tandem of Heikki Raisio and Kurwa Doktor rupture eardrums with head-splitting, monstrous performances.
Nekrokluster is far from a modern masterpiece and Cannibal Accident aren't a top candidate to achieve similar heights as Napalm Death or Impaled Nazarene (their black metal equivalent), but they're serviceable and fun and good at what they do. Unfortunately, they lack a unique persona within their field and a standout feature to help separate from the rest of the underground -- a sum of solid parts, though none of an extraordinary nature.
