Testament - Tracking New Record

Bay Area thrash metal legends Testament have checked in from the studio where the band is working on new material for the follow-up to 2020's Titans Of Creation. Due out sometime in 2024, it will be the band's first release with former Seven Spires drummer Chris Dovas, who joined Testament earlier this year.

Guitarist Eric Peterson wrote via Testament's Facebook: "Busy week finished, straight after the Asian tour Chris Dovas and I locked ourselves in the #dragonlair and jammed out 4 new crushing song ideas & crushing riffs! Super thrashing drums… so stoked New recordings coming soon!"

They have only one really good album under their belts, The Legacy. I'm not holding my breath for the new album.

I've never understood this point of view and here I thought I was a picky listener , but I've always liked Testament.
Marcel used to say the same thing, only the the debut was great and half of The New Order. I think he was a very demanding listener.

A long time ago I would’ve thought the same. But then I checked out The Gathering and it’s become pretty much on par with The Legacy for me.

I thought some of the albums between The New Order and The Gathering were (or still are) also excellent, like Practice What You Preach, Souls Of Black, Low, etc. for example. They may not be on par with the early albums, but they are just some of my favorite Testament albums. Demonic was alright but my least favorite of theirs from that period is obviously The Ritual, I think it's because of the fact that it was a bit too commercial or radio-friendly.

The New Order - is mostly good, but one can't help feeling that the band is rehashing 3-4 riffs all the time. Fortunalely, enough youthful exuberance and bravado seeps through the music, making the album quite enjoyable.
Practice What You Preach - the formula is already showing signs of exhaustion. Most of the songs sound tired, their languid pace isn't helping either.
Souls of Black - this one sounds like it was recorded on auto-pilot. Zero good ideas, 99% of riffs are ripoffs from older albums.
The Ritual - no guys, you can't make your own Black Album. If I ever suffer from insomnia, I'll use this album to put me to sleep.
Low - "let's not get too thrashy, but also let's suck up to old fans". The result is super boring. I only remember Chasing Fear.
Demonic - super heavy, super bland.
The Gathering - finally a good album on par with The New Order.
The Formation Of Damnation - how to record an album after 10 years and make the listener forget about it in 10 hours.
The Brotherhood Of The Snake - has a few good songs.
Titans Of Creation - another uninspired assembly line product. Nothing grabs attention.

Testament's biggest problem is lack of variety because they stick to their thrash formula too strictly.
