Evile, Warbringer - Nottingham, England, 21st January 2010 by Baz Anderson (38) |
The Basement of Rock City in Nottingham sees its first thrash assault of the new year. A cold January evening, as the doors opened and the room became inhabited it first appeared that it would be a quiet one with most people choosing the comfort of their homes and a CD player over the real thing. Things soon changed however.
The Fading
These guys came over from Israel and are on the Wacken Records label. Put across as a melodic death metal band, they turned out to sound much more thrash than expected. Charismatic frontman and bouncing drummer behind the kit brought the show to life with the help of the shouts and fists of a few people, the main core of audience at this point. The band had a couple of melodic death metal outbursts, but the driving force was one of thrash. These guys played their instruments well and can be proud of a surprisingly enjoyable performance.

Warbringer
From the United States, these guys have just released their second album "Waking Into Nightmares" which blows the first one out of the water. The band members have clearly grown as musicians and a band, and this translated into one hell of a explosive show. Unfortunately the gods of time-slots were not on the band's side giving them only half an hour, but the band made good use of this time with a set fully comprised of new songs but two. The audience were pumped, and the band's Jekyll & Hyde frontman providing endless facial expressions and shooting the crowd with his machine-gun mic. gave the show a new tangent of entertainment to enjoy. The songs sounded fantastic, the bass drums were a little drowned out, but the energy was ever present. Warbringer are a thrash band that know how to thrash the good way, this short but extremely lively set gave the audience what they came for, and turned out to be the highlight of the night. Warbringer are a name to pay attention to in the thrash metal scene.

Evile
As the guys took the stage, before any music, frontman Matt Drake had a few words for the audience where he thanked all the fans for their support over the last months regarding the unfortunate circumstances the band found themselves in with Mike. He thanked the audience for turning up, told us to "bear with them" for the next year or so while they find their feet again and introduced the band's new bass player but jokingly to "be gentle with him". These guys had a much longer set as headliners and made use of it with a varied set of songs from the two albums. The band didn't seem 100%, but gave a great show nonetheless. The faster, thrashier songs came over much better live, as did the songs from the first album, generally. The speed of the guitars in songs such as "Thrasher" is insane, but on the other hand the inclusion of "Now Demolition" from the new album really dragged. There is a little game you can play while watching Evile live, and that is trying to decide which band they sound more like; Slayer or Metallica. Either way however, the audience were completely behind the band and seemed to thoroughly enjoy the show. All three bands helped to put on a great night of thrash and can consider themselves part of a great tour.
