That's only if you didn't pay enough attention to "You killed Kenny!" cliche in South Park episodes. After a while it became so normal and obvious that Kenny would die, that it became funny when he actually doesn't die in several episodes (for example when his girlfriend revives him and the boys are wondering wtf just happened).
It's stepping out of norm to make it more interesting. And seeing as there was only one survivor in the Bodom lake murder, I consider it following this idea to put Kenny in such position
