Five years my friends, we had to wait five really long years to have the luck to finally listen to the new Symphony X. The band promised something great and "heavy", I can tell you that they didn't lie to their fans because "Paradise Lost" is probably the heavier and darker album of the American combo but also one of their bests. It's good to see that SX is back and better than ever and after all even if it was long, we didn't wait for nothing. "Paradise Lost" is an amazing album damn so, be prepared for one of the biggest blast of the year 2007!!!

I will never say that "Paradise Lost" is better or not than the other albums of Symphony X for the simple reason that anyway, I love all their albums and I don't want to do any classification. But be sure of one thing, with "Paradise Lost" SX respects its promises. The album is really aggressive with a ton of heavy and loud riffs (like with "Evolution (The Grand Design)") and of course with all the ingredients of the musical recipe of the band. The great melodies, the symphonic arrangements, the super technical keyboards and guitars soli and the really long songs are still there but the main change on this release is the voice of Russel Allen. Here, the amazing singer uses a lot of aggressive voices (even a bit hoarsy sometime) and you'll be able to see that it's heavy yeah! "Paradise Lost" is a bit like "V" with the principal difference that this release is a lot more "in your face", not so complex and it will maybe be problematic for the fans who like pure Progressive Metal. I cannot say that "Paradise Lost" is not "Prog" because it's progressive for sure but when you compare it to "The Odyssey" or "V" it's a bit different. "Paradise Lost" is easier of access which doesn't mean that it's bad, at the opposite, but a song like "Eye Of Seduction" (even if it's all but not simple) is clearly more oriented toward the Power and Heavy Metal direction than the Progressive one. Some of you will like it, some others will find that it's maybe a bit too simple for a band like Symphony X and will regret the lack of complex passages, but don't worry, this is the only reproach that I will do today and this reproach is only for some few songs (I will never say that for Revelation (Divus Pennae ex Tragoedia)" for example).

Except this little remark about the lack of complexity and "deepness" on some songs, all is great here. The musicians are better than ever (this is probably the best performance of the American musicians, even if I regret that Russel doesn't use a lot his classy super clean voice. Agressive vocals are cool but pure clean vocals are great too...) and from the beginning to the end, "Paradise Lost" just kicks our asses. I listened to this album a dozen of times already and it's never boring, at the opposite the choruses and melodies all stay in our memory and it's clearly some kind of songs that you'll sing in your head during all the day. Plus the production is just amazing and the heavy sound of the band is super perceptible and I have nothing to say about the philosophical lyrics about the problems produced by the humans which are just excellent (as always with the band). "Paradise Lost" is a bit like a synonym of perfection.

"Paradise Lost" is a real must, a masterpiece of Metal. Clearly more accessible than the previous albums of the combo, it will probably be the album of the consecration for the American act, the album for ALL the fans of Metal. Nothing to add really, we didn't wait for nothing and Symphony X confirms one more time that they're one of the best combos of the whole Metal scene. Don't wait anymore, "Paradise Lost" is out now and this is a must so run to your records-shop to buy, for me (and for now of course (we're still in July hehe )) the album of the year 2007!

Sounds good, only one of their albums I really like. But this band should really have 2 guitar players! Then their sound had been even better.

Ahhhh!!!! PARADISE LOST!!!!!
You know, I've never seen an album both agressive and melodic like that one.
DOMINATION! hehhee, i like it when Russell screams ''get down on your knees''!

Well, I voted 10, for this album really owns them all (hehe One Ring To Rule Them All, One Album To Own Them All;)
But I would have liked Revelation to be longer. Symphony is able to make very long songs, and these songs (Divine Wings Of Tragedy, The Odyssey) were their best! So the 9 minutes of Revelation was not long. Nevertheless, it owns!
And just look at their album! The pictures are so great! They just drew the End Of The World!
Symphony X - Paradise Lost, I see it : Album Of The Year, Album Of All Times!

I was very pleased with this release. The Odyssey was pretty good, but it really didn't satisfy me. Paradise Lost is a whole nother story. This album doesn't have a dull moment, and the band's superb musicianship really shines through.

It's true that they have left their fans to wait for quite a while, but this album is certainly worth the waiting. Classic stuff in my opinion.... If you're into metal just go get this one.

The album is just amazing really agressive and raw. I agree that if they change their style they would be critised because people are just so fucking closed of minds. If they have lot succes they can make more different music but if they dont it wouldnt be a smart idea to do a experimental album.

The layoff definitely paid off with their best album overall. Russell Allen announced at our concert that the band had more material, so there wouldn't be such a long wait between albums. Thank goodness!!

Its outstanding. It really stands out of everything else you listened to in terms of prog metal this year. They should be (i'm sure they are) proud to have an album like this on their discography, especially after all the good albums they released in the past. "domination" and "the serpent's kiss" are probably my favourites out of this one.

If the guys would just release a DVD they would rule the world. Seriously, there aren't too many bands who are able to compete with the consistently good song writing of these guys since Divine Wings. They blow all crappy "so called" heavy band's out of the water with just the intro of this album. They've got radio friendly songs too.. I'd love to hear Serpent's Kiss on the radio because the band would increase their following by thousands just by getting played on the radio.

Hey, hey whats this all about no critics? Well, i got to say this album is really not what I expected after i heard V and the Odyssey. It is actually very good but i would have gave 8 or 8.5 TOP because the artistic work is not really present. Yeah the solos are great, yeah the guitar riffs are strong and aggressive but somehow i didnt feel attracted even after the thirs listening. I prefer to listen to Adagio or Circus Maximus that are younger bands and they got a lot of things to prove and they do it wonderfully still a buy to me but definately overrated album.

Circus Maximus cannot say a piss at this point of their career, where they are still getting rid of really prominent influences in their music, one of them being SX... It is not bad that someone has influences, but it shouldnt be as "visible" as on CM first two albums, lets see what they will pull off next time...
And dont criticise a prog band just because it shows more melody or groove...
Although not as great as Odyssey, I still like that album and that was the reason I bought it

I only have one word for this album: Masterpiece. And I'm not a fan of prog metal, and I cannot stop listening to it.

It's my favourite SX album. It really put them on the map I think. While the other releases were consistently good, it seems that Paradise Lost gave them more visability, followed by the tour with Dream Theater as well.

In a way, I think they were always accessible, so I disagree that this album was more accessible than the previous albums. Other than that, great review.

This was my first symphony x album and they are amazing!

But I have a little question that I hope someone could answer. I feel like an idiot asking this, but is the bands name symphony X, or is the X a roman numeral for 10?

I know, probably a really dumb question, but I am just curious

No the X doesn´t represent roman numeral for 10, its simply the letter X after the Symphony.

Exactly...Though my first and only SX album. All tracks are masterpieces. Don't really like the lyrical content, perhaps that's because i have no idea of Milton's Paradise Lost...
But subjects such as Adam & Eve's descent aint my interest. However, it surely is a fantastic album.

Symohony X is my all time favorite band but this album was a real let down for me. This is all personal opinion but I just can't lie. I really don't like the aggressive vocals and most of the guitar solos are just copies of earlier ones. Also some of the keyboard stuff is directly copied from earlier albums. Well at least thats how I hear it after having been listening to the band for many many years.

The album is good but there is a change of style I can't really accept or like as much as the earlier symphony X. I'm surprised to not see more opinions similar to mine.
