Destroy The Opposition is probably the best album ever created by Dying Fetus. It is the crest of their career and maybe the limit of their potential. In this album the band has the best line-up they've ever had and this is something worth to be mentioned. Unfortunately, despite the great success the album had, three of the four members of the band quitted only a few months after it's release.
With Destroy The Opposition Dying Fetus change radically their lyrical direction, going from gory themes to lyrics with many political meanings. The only exception may be "Pissing In The Mainstream" which is more like a humorous song (as it's title says it goes against the mainstream) with lyrics like "I don't give a fuck about the Hollywood elite; I don't really care if models can't fucking eat"!
Let's talk now about the musical achievements of the band in this release. The physical progress of the band showed that after the very good Killing On Adrenaline they would at least release something equal to it. They didn't let down those who believed in them. Destroy The Opposition includes some crushing Death Metal songs. "Praise The Lord (Opium Of The Masses)", "Born In Sodom", "For Us Or Against Us" and "Justifiable Homicide" are some of them. With duration between 4.30 and 5.30 minutes, these songs consist of many hyper - technical and powerful riffs as well as some slower and much catchier too, that will make you unable to stop banging your head. "Pissing In The Mainstream" is also a great song. It keeps for less than two minutes and it is a Death Metal storm. So, musically Destroy The Opposition is magnificent. It contains the biggest number of great riffs that the band has ever put in one single album. The drumming is as always, incredible and the vocals are once more something special (there are not so many bands that have two different vocalists doing the growling vocals).
Another advantage of the album is it's variety. It is almost impossible to get bored while listening to Destroy The Opposition as the band did a great songwriting for this release. You won't face any repetition at any moment during the album. Another thing is that the songs don't have the standard structure. Almost no song follows the formula "verse - chorus". The riffs alternate all the time and are rarely repeated. The band knows very well how to write great songs as when a riff is repeated it is always the best riff of the song. The production of the album is also very good, their best work so far, and the cover artwork is magnificent too.
To sum up, Destroy The Opposition images Dying Fetus at their best. Hyper-fast, ultra-violent and sometimes catchy Death Metal. In contrast, I find it a bit difficult to use objectively the word "masterpiece". So I'll just say that: " Destroy The Opposition is a masterpiece of Dying Fetus."
Recommended to ALL Death Metal fans. (Also for some guys who haven't listened to this band yet: give it many spins as it is a grower).
