Following 1994's stripped-down release Hate, Sarcófago released what would be their last full-length album, 1997's ironically titled The Worst.
Where do I begin? Okay, first off, they still have that annoying drum machine, but thankfully they finally learned how to program it, so it doesn't have the same three obnoxious patterns like in Hate. However, unlike in that album, The Worst doesn't try to be absolutely fast. It begins with a somewhat melodic acoustic/keyboard intro "The End", after that it advances into the title track "The Worst". From here you realize that the sound is probably the most death metal-oriented of all the Sarcófago albums. Decent track, but nothing great. Moving on, we are led to "Army of the Damned (The Prozac's Generation)" which is pretty much the same as "The Worst", only faster and with a boring solo.
From then on, you realize what direction the band decided to take. They wanted to be a brutal death metal band in this one. Trouble is, the riffs are all bland and uninteresting, and at times they actually sound like a bad groove metal band with black metal vocals. Wagner's vocal style just doesn't match here, it doesn't fit with the music.
"God Bless the Whore" is one of the slower tracks on the album, but once again sounds bland with some feedback more fitting of symphonic metal, but that doesn't help it. "Plunged in Blood" and "Purification Process" try the hardest to sound death metal, both of them having decent but identical solos, sadly the groove riffs kick in again. It all tries to be fast and powerful, but ends up mediocre. Then we have another re-recording of their classic track "Satanic Lust" which would be good, if not for the fact that they got carried away with the drum machine again, making it pound and buzz its way through the entire song so it overpowers the guitar.
The album ends with "Purification Process", which has another slightly ambient part like in the intro, but is nothing special at all. Overall, this is the last Sarcófago album I'd recommend picking up, if at all. Fittingly titled "The Worst", its approach is the most basic and stripped down of all their albums, turning what could have been a potentially worthy death metal release to an odd, bland groove-death album.
