Kvlt Madness Presents: An Intro To WAR METAL!

So, What is WAR METAL?

Many define the micro-genre of "War Metal" as a chaotic blend of Thrash/Grindcore riffing infused with Black Metal Ideals, voxs, and lo-fi attitude. It can also lean more towards the way of Death as well. Many of the bands take heavy influence form the genre of Bestial Black Metal. When it comes to "extreme" genres of music, it doesn't get much more brutal or lo-fi as these bands...which is just the way I love it! Dirty and RAW! They rely heavily on the themes of despair, Satan, tyranny, death, nihilism, goat heads, gas masks, social unrest, nuclear holocaust, and obviously war.

The main point of this list is to give you a firm footing in the battlefield that is War Metal. I start the list off with some of the genres heaviest influences, then go straight into the nuclear holocaust that this genre is all about! And much like a true battlefield, after #5, the albums are in no particular order, just listen to or buy them all!

So, without further adieu, this is Kvlt Madness Presents: An Intro To WAR METAL! Let The Bullet Belts Loose!

I would have put Beherit's "The Oath Of Black Blood" instead of "Drawing Down The Moon", I find it more representative of that "war metal" aspect.

I agree! 100%. But I couldn't find it in Metalstorm's collection and I wanted to have as much album artwork as possible. Maybe I'll try to add it later.

That's because it's considered a compilation on the site

Ahhhh... that makes a lot of sense lol. Well, for what it's worth, good ear! A lot of people don't even know who Beherit is. I was going to add Sarcofago to the list as well, but figured it'd be over to many people's heads....but their album I.N.R.I. really set the tone for what War Metal is all about and what it would become.

Passable list.

Also, a lot more people know Sarcofago than Beherit. Beherit is kvlt nowadays, so they're really not that unknown amongst metalheads.

Too much Blasphemophagher, btw.

Wow, I used the word "also" three times in a row. Damn, I really wasn't paying any attention.

Well, I assumed Sarcofago would be more well-known what with the Sepultura ties and all, but I guess kvlt black metal is cooler to listen to nowadays.

I dunno, maybe because I've listened to a lot of Beherit but virtually no (maybe none at all) Sarcofago I couldn't imagine them being the bigger band. Beherit are like, uber-kvlt.

It's an acquired taste...but if you are into extreme forms of metal, mainly black/death, I highly recommended checking it out!

Hahaha those two from Sarcofago only played with Sepultura once or so and even before Sepultura had recorded anything, not really a claim to fame. They have less ties with Sepultura than Lloyd Grant has with Metallica

I just added Sarcofago haha.

They're chaotic sound plays a direct influence, and even though they aren't as well known as Beherit, they should still be included on this list and people should check them out!

Dammit...I knew I should of just included them to begin with lol

So now you added a totally crap shit band to an otherwiose fine list, shame on you sir.
Sarcofago's only claim to fame is they were a very early thrash band from South America that started the same year as Sepultura, and are actually hardly influential at all. Crap early Sepultura's raw thrash is just as influential... totally not.

Totally not influential is of course nto true. But Sarcofago only became influential years and years after they split up to people who think that Sarcofago were influential when they released their stuff. So, to the ANUS and MA Forums crowds who seem to revel in musical revisionism

I never said that they were influential WHEN they released their album , I said that they were influential to the beginning of War Metal as a micro-genre. I am sure they were regarded as horse-shit when they first came out

BUT...

I.N.R.I. 's use of blast beats, chaotic song structures, lo-fi attitude, and visual appeal (not to bring fashion into it...but I mean the ridiculous bullet belts, the make-up, the leather jackets and patch-work vests) has made the album legendary in the extreme metal world.

they were just copying the likes of Venom, Destruction, Kreator, Sodom, Voivod, INfernal Majesty etc etc in that sense. That dress code was totally normal back in the day for bands when INRO was released
That was all part of the image bands tried to get across on album and live.

Agreed, but I still feel that they took it to an "extreme" level comparatively. (look at the nails in their boots! lol)

Plus, I.N.R.I. is just a masterpiece for lo-fi/extreme metal IMO. And I am not just saying that because it is "kvlt" or whatever, I legitimately like the album and feel it was very influential to all "extreme" genres of music...of course my taste is a very acquired one...lol

Not sure about the war, but in this list I find some bands that I really enjoy already. Sarcofago, Beherit... and some names that I'm not familiar with.

So - I take this list as a way to discover perhaps more fuckin' great metal to my daily meal. Thanks!

Tetianblood has put out some really good stuff and Beherit are some of the grad-daddys of extreme metal!

If you haven't checked out some of the other bands on the list, I would give them a spin. A lot of it is really harsh and lo-fi compared to what you may like, but there is a lot of "polished" and stellar releases on this list as well!

Check out Teitanblood's Purging Tongues (only available on vinyl 12" plus side B has a cool etching on it). Fifteen and a half minutes of awesomeness.
But I wouldn't classify Teitanblood as war metal though.
