Old Nick's Top-30 Of 2018

These are the 30 albums I listened to the most in 2018. I haven't paid much attention to the albums' order. It's been a pretty good year for metal, just like every year; if you are willing to search, you will find. I'd love to hear how good or bad you think this list is.

Best EP: Cleõphüzz - Wizard Of Phüzz
Best Demo: Dionysiaque - Dionysiaque

1. Et Moriemur - Epigrammata
Absolutely divine. I already knew in March that it would be my AOTY.
2. Judas Priest - Firepower
The Metal Gods' best album since Painkiller. Enough said.
3. Varathron - Patriarchs Of Evil
Atmospheric, occult and riffy; the best black metal album of 2018.
4. Dee Snider - For The Love Of Metal
Dee's most metal record in his long and legendary career.
5. Chapel Of Disease - ...And As We Have Seen The Storm, We Have Embraced The Eye
Mark Knopfler plays death metal. Outstanding stuff.
6. Shining - X - Varg Utan Flock
Ideal soundtrack to slit your wrists to. On par with V - Halmstad.
7. Necrophobic - Mark Of The Necrogram
Dissection is no more. Long live Dissection!
8. Satan - Cruel Magic
1983 was gorgeous. It sounds even more gorgeous today.
9. Clouds - Dor
My heart bleeds every time I listen to this.
10. 1914 - The Blind Leading The Blind
WWI-themed death metal mixed with black and doom? I'm sold.
11. On Thorns I Lay - Aegean Sorrow
My death/doom companion for the rainy days.
12. Behemoth - I Loved You At Your Darkest
I love the dark sound even if it's "softer".
13. Messa - Feast For Water
Less droney than the debut, yet equally magnificent doom.
14. Morne - To The Night Unknown
Post-metal with riffs. Brilliant and rare.
15. Human Serpent - For I, The Misanthropist
The best black metal band that has emerged during this decade.
16. Tribulation - Down Below
Gothic brilliance. As catchy as it gets.
17. Erdve - Vaitojimas
Lithuanian blackened sludge sharing my debut of the year award along with...
18. Gaerea - Unsettling Whispers
...this immersive and stirring sludgy piece of Portuguese black metal art.
19. Amorphis - Queen Of Time
Sailing the seas of delicious cheese.
20. Khemmis - Desolation
No surprise here. Khemmis cannot release a bad album.
21. Soulfly - Ritual
I've listened to this album more times than I want or care to admit.
22. Towards Atlantis Lights - Dust Of Aeons
Excellent funeral doom inspired by ancient civilizations. Finally a supergroup justifies the title.
23. Panopticon - The Scars Of Man On The Once Nameless Wilderness
Half black metal and half American folk. Best enjoyed when snowed in.
24. Dødsferd - Diseased Remnants Of A Dying World
Melancholic poetry, claustrophobic bleakness and provocative aggression.
25. Evoken - Hypnagogia
Every Evoken album rips the sky apart.
26. Deceased - Ghostly White
Death, thrash, heavy, melodic; all metal is here. Just listen to "Germ Of Distorted Lore".
27. Funeral Mist - Hekatomb
Yeah it kinda sounds like Marduk. It is also fucking awesome.
28. Visigoth - Conqueror's Oath
Put on your armour and let's go to battle.
29. Heir Apparent - The View From Below
The comeback to end all comebacks. Heavy/power prog from the 1980s legends.
30. Jungle Rot - Jungle Rot
Festival of death metal riffs.

Time and repeated listens have made the album of Chapel Of Disease my favourite from that year.
