Before the Black Circle, before Deads suicide, before the murder of Euronymous, before the church burnings, before black metal as we now know it, there was Deathcrush! In 1987, the now legendary Mayhem birthed what would become one of the most influential black metal albums ever. This album is almost entirely responsible for what we know black metal as today. Perhaps Venom coined the phrase "Black Metal" but this album (along with a few others) is what was really responsible for the genre from a technical standpoint. The simplicity, the atmosphere, the production, the aggression, this is what black metal is all about!

I like to think of this as the missing link between 1st and 2nd wave. There are definite thrash and death influences, but there is also that whole shriek and blast beat thing going on, without a doubt this is 50% 50% when it comes to the whole "BM waves" thing.

The album is awesome therefore a rating of 9. The only annoying thing are the overly high vocals from maniac.

30 FUCKING YEARS.
No matter my mood, every time I hear that opening intro on Deathcrush my mind goes apeshit somehow and I start making poses (in my head when Im with people) a la Immortal. Animalistic stuff.

Metal Diogenes
That intro always baffled me. It was composed by a German cult synth musician Conrad Schnitzler who really doesn't have anything to do with metal music other than this. Allegedly Euronymous was a huge fan of his work and once even slept outside his apartment since the man wouldn't let him in, so at the end Schnitzler agreed to compose him something without even knowing what kind of music Mayhem were playing. Some other story goes that he just sent them a tape via mail after they asked politely, but I prefer the first one.

Edit. Believe it or not, but the first version is actually the truth as told by Schnitzler himself. Euronymous basically stalked Schnitzler and slept outside his apartment to get his attention, so at the end Schnitzler was overwhelmed by his sincere enthusiasm and let him in.
