Starting as a fairly straightforward Swedish black metal band, Mephorash have come a long way since their debut album, Death Awakens, back in 2011. 1557-Rites Of Nullification marked a willingness to explore more interesting aesthetics, deeper meanings, and more mysterious soundscapes, but the big shift came with Shem Ha Mephorash, an album that was massive, both in scope and runtime. Krystl-Ah is the apotheosis of this exploration.

I have to say this is one of the most impressive black metal releases I've heard this year, it's epic, dark, melodic, atmospheric, and has some terrific lead guitar work. It kinda sounds like Rotting Christ meets Moonspell at times, with some post-metal elements thrown in, which I really like. Although the whole album is pretty impressive "Gnosis" and "Catoptrophilia" are phenomenal tracks in particular, and stand out most for me.

I absolutely agree with you. The 3-minute chanting at the end of "Gnosis" that continues 1 minute into "Catoptrophilia" is both hypnotic and absorbing. It's definitely the best part of an overall excellent album. We also get what probably is the best production of the year. You already used the words epic, dark, melodic, atmospheric to describe this album. I'd like to add majestic. And it kinda baffles me that the new Shylmagoghnar album gets all that attention while this album seems to be painfully overlooked, because Krystl-Ah is several levels above Convergence imo.

I feel like this is a lesser album than the two that came before it. It is grand in its scope and ambitions, but some of the delivery is missing. Still, it is packed with great moments and amazing buildups. The last track is epic.

Another good album from them, I love the atmosphere. However, just like the previous one, I feel like there is clearly not enough variation throughout to justify over an hour of content. I would like it much better if it clocked at around 45mn.

First time I've heard something from this guys and it is pretty good. It has some arrangements and layers just in the right measure (could have turned cheesy/ overproduced easily) but they've hit a good balance.
