Over time, black metal has diversified so much from its uncompromising origins that we not only have two separate categories for ‘regular’ black and melodic black metal in the Metal Storm Awards, but also have albums spilling over into metalgaze and post-metal. On rare occasions, you get inspired albums that explore all these different niches within the genre and more, such as Morokh’s Insomnia.

It's is pretty damn good this, I have to say. Who would have thought hardcore elements mixed within black metal would have such a dramatic atmospheric effect? It certainly does here

Tbf the blackened sludge hardcore fusions in the past few years have made some pretty great stuff (although the atmospheres admittedly are usually more suffocating and grim than some of the ones on this album), and this album is also probably as much post-black as it is blackened hardcore, but yeah it's a fantastic record

Upon further listening I'd say your right, there's definitely as much post-black involved as blackened hardcore, especially on the track "The Way To Eternity". For me it's quite a unique style.

Yeah I think it's quite unique - only given it the one listen thus far, but while I'd say it's centrally rooted in black metal, it can vary between straight black, deathy black (there's a couple of moments where Behemoth came to mind) and more melodic black, plus some hardcore, blackgaze and post-black parts across its runtime. Looking forward to giving it some more listens now that I've cleared out my 'new releases' queue from last week (just in time for next week's releases!)

Even at a 7.7 rating as of this comment, this album is quite underrated. Definitely recommend listening to this. Almost a 9 for me. And yet again I find myself being impressed by an album labeled as "hardcore" when I don't particularly like the "hardcore" genre as a whole. 8.5/10
