Not a good albums. Joey's voice is missing and the band are not the same as they were at the 80's.

This album is probably the band's strongest with Bush, although I would argue that 'Sound of white noise' fares slightly better in terms of songwriting and instrumentation. Nonetheless, this is still a collection of powerful songs, with 'Safe Home' and 'What doesn't die' proving to be some of the best songs of the band's career. It also seems to prove the band as a more co-operative group, the instruments all colliding together for a pretty tight and solid sound. My only real quip is that fourteen songs seems a little excessive, and especially because a few songs appear nothing more than filler material.

This is the problem I've always had with this album, and why I don't rate it higher. There are some genuinely amazing songs on this album, and there's a far greater quantity of them compared to what was on the previous two albums. The two songs you mentioned are great, although very different from each other. "What Doesn't Die" is a pulverising opener, a crushing thrash attack that I thought was long beyond Anthrax at this point in their careers. I was glad they proved me wrong! "Safe Home" is just wonderful, and allows John's vocals to shine at their soaring and melodic best. I also love the bridge and solo in that song! And other songs like "Black Dahlia", "Refuse To Be Denied" and "Nobody Knows Anything" (sensational drumming from Charlie on this one!) are also fine examples of John Bush Anthrax at it's best.

Unfortunately, around 4 of the songs on the album are total throwaway tracks, and definitely bring the album down a bit. If it weren't for those songs, this album would be just about on a par with the brilliant "Sound Of White Noise". As it is, it was a fine return to form after the lacklustre previous two albums, but it's too flawed overall to be called a truly classic album.

Yeah, 'Sound of white noise' was a brilliant album, surely their best with Bush.

Pretty blah album overall, but man "Safe Home" is an amazing track. Gotta be in or close to the bands top 5 songs ever.
