More than any other release in recent times, Morbid Angel's Illud Divinum Insanus has polarized our staff members. As anyone familiar with these Floridian death metal forefathers knows, they just came back from a long 8 year absence with a new album that also features their original vocalist, David Vincent, for the first time in 16 years. Due to the notability of this release, we decided to create a collaborative review, which gives all of the staff members to voice their opinions. Here they are, ranging from most negative to quite positive.

So you thought you'd heard the pinnacle of experimental metal? Think again buster, Morbid Angel are here to please their fanbase with everything they could have ever wanted: rip-roaring hardcore snarls, air-punching electro-beatz, brutal, technical Rammstein-worship and truly forward-thinking lyrical content such as the never before contemplated "KILL A COP COP, KILL A COP, KILL-A-KILL-A-COP!" all of which will have you grabbing your glowsticks, squeezing into your favourite UV neon-latex vest and before you know it you'll be throwing shapes down your local Goth-pit, big-fish, little-fish, cardboard box style. Yeah, Morbid Angel know what they're doing and are making metal sexier than ever before.

Would've been a decent (and I say that with a grain of salt) EP if they just left the industrial songs out.

I agree with this... like I said before, I kind of enjoy Existo Vulgore.

So much negativity... For me it's the least boring album since Covenant, and the first MA album that is enjoyable for me from the beginning till the end, with little to no filler. More diverse, more experimental, more exciting.
I remember people bitching when Renewal came out, and then when Host was released, and the same after St Anger... Metal fans are so conservative, unfortunately. Now MA will cave in, and next album will be less experimental and more dull again, so I'm enjoying this unexpected excursion while it lasts.

Bunch of Musicians sharing their thoughts about the new Morbid Angel album / Season Of Mist news

I copy-paste one of those here, the rest awaits behind that link ^

"One of the best death metal releases since their last album with Vincent. I'm not too much into the techno bits but I am a dude who will appreciate and respect bands doing new things, progressing... So it's all good. Vincent's vocals of course are still as good as they come. And the riffs are definitely there, Trey always delivers. New drummer is killer too!" - Mikael Åkerfeldt, Opeth

Now i am worried about Opeth coming album if that is the kind of "progress " Mikael likes .

Ah yes. I'm sure the new Opeth will be highly influenced by 70's prog rock and Static X.

Also, I was expecting something like this to surface in due time:

I love Renewal, Endorama, Host, Alternative 4, 34,788%...Complete, Diabolus in Musica. Why? Because they are awesome records, even if they marked an major shifting in the bands sound. The problem with this Illud Shitum InsAnus, is that the album simply is...bad. The only songs audible are Nevermore and Blades of Baal which are average DM songs.
But of course i respect if you like it.

There's honestly way too much unwarranted hate for the album, it might not be as good as their early work but at the same time it's experimental, fresh and pretty crazy. I've heard albums which are significantly worse.

The very first impression: What's with the David Draiman-like vocals?
Will make a concrete judgment after going through the album with adequate spins.

Edit: Horrible. Save for a couple of tracks, this one is a lame duck on a construction site. Still better than We Rule The Night, though.

Woah, so many low ratings. I suppose "Too Extreme!" did that

But seriously, minus "Too Extreme!", "Radikult" and "Destructhos versus some shit slash some bullshit" this album is actually pretty decent. Two songs, "I am Morbid" and "10 More Dead" delicately skim the surface of excellence, and a few more are quite decent: "Nevermore", "Blades for Baal", "Beauty Meets Beast".

But, as it is in vogue this day and age, most people listened to the album once (if that), remembered the new adventurous tracks that obviously stand out, and rushed to bash the album. Listening done fast, superficially, hastily (so many other albums to download!!!), without proper attention that Morbid Angel deserve just for the sole fact that their 3 first albums are metal masterpieces. What can you remember from 1 listen? Fuck all, is what I say. But it's oh so tempting to jump the bandwagon and start the fucking bash carnival, blind as a bat and deaf as a 2x4.

I honestly disagree with you... As you can see from my rating I don't bash the album completely but I totally understand 2s and 3s. Because not only it has very very average industrial like Too Extreme! (seriously, that shit sounds exactly like madagascar's I like to move it move it"), destructos vs something or Radikult and its brilliant lyrics...
It has also to do with the fact that even the death metal tracks are very meh, if the album tries to be experimental well that is fine with me since I love experimentations (I think Grand Declaration Of War is a brilliant album) but this experimentation isn't even good, it's a waste of time. A compilation of tracks that don't even make a clear line, a compilation of awful to average at best tracks.

I won't deny that there are many who are like you describe, just voted like the sheep they are. But I still think the Most of the people have good reasons for their low ratings.
Also.. the last point is awful tbh... Just because a band does 3 mastrerpieces on a row that's NOT an excuse to listen to the album again if you just didn't like it in the first place.

I also think it's a pretty wild claim to suggest that the majority of people only listened to this once and judged it from there. There's no "vogue" being played out here, this isn't nu-metal/metalcore/deathcore we're talking about, this is a highly anticipated record judged by hardcore fans of the band. I think they're overreacting personally and letting their fandom get in the way of objectivity (I reckon if this was a debut by a band called "Dirge Stompers" or something it'd have a score of around 7.6) but I'd never put it down to them listening to it the once as I doubt that was the case. In fact I would imagine they'd listen to it multiple times to try and scrape whatever they can from it before realising this is not the album they expected, and in any light this isn't exactly a "deep" record; its style and goal here is clear, I very much doubt multiple listens would reveal nuances that would allay fan's disdain. "Bashing" is done to bands that people hate, Morbid Angel is quite clearly not a band that people hate. It's paranoid and presumptuous to generalise about people's motives here, without a shred of fact your comment looks like a bitter diatribe frankly. Let people have their disappointment, we've all had ours at some point or another.
