Got Mayhem?
One of those death metal masterpieces that never really made it big.

A true gem, there is an original approach to mood and feeling that is formed through all members of the band and their sheer crushing heaviness reminds me of Bolt Thrower or Dismember.

Why is this release highly regarded and when does it start to become good?

[EDIT} 2nd chance and I can see where Morbid Angel likely got inspired from this format on albums after.

Awesome album, I love it. Everything I enjoy about death metal is here, but without the sour taste of endless recycling many other similar bands tend to have. Maybe the production is a bit dated, but it fits the dirty and evil storm of guitar riffs perfectly. Sucks that it's so damn hard to come by these days.

I agree 100%
This has everything that death metal stands for! Besides the obviously incredibly intense riffs, I also find it great that the lyrics aren't about gore, but rather about desolation, sorrow, oblivion, isolation, desperation, etc. Those lyrical themes are so much more impactful and heavy!

Yes, I also hear some Asphyx in the guitar riffs. Sometimes the riffs even slow down to a doom-sound!
In conclusion, every song is great, contributing to the unrelenting storm of pure metal perfection! One of the greatest albums of death metal history!

Another OSDM classic, has a great powerful tone and production, and some solid groovy riffs. This was a band with some great potential shame it wasn't meant to be.
