First of all I will have to warn you about two things: 1. This album is not much of a metal album. When Arjen (the composer) wrote this double album about the universal migrator, he splitted it into two parts - one of which is almost only metal and one which is not metal at all. How is this even progressive? Isn't progressive supposed to have heaps of chop and changes and odd timing? This just sounds like atmospheric rock music with a bit more originality..

The "prog rock" half of the Universal Migrator. I always thought it was kind of a bad idea to split the Universal Migrator albums into one metal and one prog rock, as both end up as feeling a bit one-sided. With that said most songs here are actually good or even better, I would say the songs are actually stronger than the album as a whole, if that makes sense. I think one of the main problem is the length of the songs, many songs here are 7 minutes or longer, and rarely it feels justified

This album is definitely the better of the two Migrators. The second one is heavier but ultimately pretty lackluster and has zero variety in comparison to this one. Would probably place it second only to Human Equation as Ayreon’s best album.
