According to Orthodox Easter, Christ will be resurrected by the end of this specific week, springtime unfolds its wings in a shy way, slowly but steadily, the flowers bloom, the butterflies dance and "The Vampire From Nazareth" is about to be awakened. Well, my dear friends, this is the most appropriate moment of the year for a new Septicflesh album.

Just ignore what people have been saying and go in thinking of it as a modern death metal album.

How the fuck people can call it that is because it's a death metal album, and it's new: hence, modern.

I'm afraid you people are taking Troy's comment out of context. I merely asked how to go about listening to it objectively and separate myself from the hype that surrounded this record. To treat it like newer death metal DOES make sense to me-- I haven't actually listened to much of Septic Flesh's music before, so that description actually helped me a lot. It's all about abstracting yourself away from any expectations of the music...if you described it as "symphonic death metal", I would have immediately anticipated symphonic elements performed to the same calibre as Anorexia Nervosa or Skyfire or other bands that use symphonies well. I actually appreciate Troy trying to generalize the music as far as possible, and I think I had some success seeing the music apart from the hype. He wasn't trying to define it under a particular genre (if you can actually do that to music), but rather attempting to situate the new listener.
As for the album...this is a solid 8/10 for me. The symphonic elements are done perfectly, the vocals are quite adequate and the intertwined rare female vocals are just stunning...just wish there was a bit more technicality a la Obscura to truly floor me (although that's rarely done in the genre). As well, my love for avant-garde metal wishes there was more "insanity" to it-- it came across as straightforward and direct, and usually I enjoy it when my metal actually introduces surprises. The rating may just be indicative of the post-rock mood I'm in right now. Of course I will evaluate this rating when I listen to more of Septic Flesh's music, but as it stands...it's a very good album.

i think the word "modern" has to do with things that have elements that are liked a lot in present. i cant express it great but i hope you get me. there arent only the terms "modern" and "old". when you say "death metal" you mean the "classic version" of it right? when you say modern in my mind come things like new bands who have tried something new in DM that has become something like "fashion". if you get me.

Glad to hear it helped. It's the same process I "go under" before reviewing an album. I ignore the hype and genre classifications and the band's credentials and listen to it as an album released by a band. Then I get into the band's history and whatnot just for comparison's sake.

I suppose modern vs. old school descriptors immediately brings forth an argument, but I wasn't trying to label it as a "modern death metal" album; I was trying to help a user by categorizing it as a modern (as in recent) death metal album. I do understand where you're coming from - I think you just misinterpreted my initial comment. No biggy.

As yet undecided whether or not this is more film-soundtrack than it is metal. I've always found Septic Flesh rather hard to get my teeth into as they don't have a great amount of depth 'neath the glossy, expensive sounding veneer but that being said this is a fun little record that reminds of good times watching Stargate.

These big bands are so lucky. They can make average/pretty good albums and have them considered 'masterpieces'.

Who really cares about your the rating anyway ? I really think is a great album especially in the 2011 era when few bother to come up with something bold.Septic Flesh did it in a great manner and truly deserve the great musicians status. The Great Mass is beyond just Symphonic Metal or Death Metal. It's fresh, exciting, intense and larger than life even, like every metal album should be.

But it's like I said somewhere in one of my previous posts...

We all hear and listen to music differently. So what I consider to be a masterpiece, someone else may find to be lame and vice versa. The Great Mass, for me is an almost perfect representation of music that I've tried to create in my head and compose for years. My friends on the other hand definitely don't really understand this kind of music, let alone album the same way. They may understand its appeal, but it doesn't speak or connect with them in any way.

I was driving with my band members in the car, and I had burned The Great Mass onto CD (since I won't get my actually copy until May...thanks a lot Amazon :@)...and I was blasting the album while driving lol. Well my band members (soon to be former band members, since Im leaving the band lol), had no real opinion about it. It wasn't interesting to them, but it's not their type of music. They're all about bands like Led Zeppelin, The Who, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains etc. The bass player is also into all of these Jazzy bass players too. They do listen to some metal like Metallica and Megadeth, and other bands here and there but thats about it.

Don't get me wrong...I'm not attacking you or anything like that lol.

Agree with the first part, but not the second. I'm a huge black metal fan, but that doesn't mean every black metal release interests me. And I don't like a lot of trip hop, but I do like Portishead.

Oh I agree...I didn't necessarily mean it like that. I love death metal, but there are some death metal bands/albums that are of no interest to me (Cannibal Corpse for example). I don't really care that much for the Blues, but I do like BB King.

I guess the overall point that I'm trying to make is as I said before. What some people may consider to be a masterpiece, others may find to be garbage. It's all about opinion.

Personally, I don't see Septicflesh or other big metal bands as lucky. They have fans who are dedicated to their music and enjoy everything they do; their level of talent is irrelevant. The only luck I see in music are bands or artists being discovered and signed to a label because they have the connections or were at the right place at the right time. Miley Cirus for example is lucky because of her father and all his connections. But the fact that she's still "singing" and releasing music isn't because she's lucky, but because there are actually fans out there who respect, enjoy and love all of her music, despite the fact that most of us here think its complete garbage. Thats how I see it at least.

But again...it all boils down to opinion.
