Bloodiest - Descent
Words fail me on this one, prepare for a sludge induced trip across untamed grassy plains and distantmountain ranges. At least that's where this album took me, it might take you somewhere else entirely. The track 'Slave Rule' is one of the most amazing musical experiences I've ever been subjected to.

Ava Inferi - Onyx

4.
Cormorant - Dwellings
I knew one of my recently discovered favourite bands wouldn't let me down with their new release. Little did I know that they would exceed themselves and craft another fantastic myriad of progressive/traditional/melodeath/black/folk metal with a thoughtful theme. Just as good if not better than their stellar debut.

5.
Insomnium - One For Sorrow
Some albums just push all the right buttons for you. Oddly enough in the year of 2011 it came from an unlikely source for me, Melodic death, a genre not among my favourites. But this beautifully composed and moving piece of music is one of my top albums from a fantastic year.
50.
6.
Giant Squid - Cenotes
Giant Squid certainly won me over with this excellent release. It's on the short side but every moment is pure progressive pleasure that will have you salivating at every note.
50.
7.
Pagan's Mind - Heavenly Ecstasy
With power metal lacking in 2011 good old Pagan's Mind delivered just what I needed to hear, some catchy melodies that will have you hooked in a flash. Their very best effort.
50.
8.
Unexpect - Fables Of The Sleepless Empire
Some like a bit of challenge to their music, so do I. That's why this was such a rewarding experience once you get a grip on this insane slippery creature.
50.
9.
MurkRat - Drudging The Mire
Drudging indeed. Once you enter the Mire it will claim your soul.
50.
10.
Vader - Welcome To The Morbid Reich
Thoroughly enjoyable Death metal that will leave you immensely satisfied, you have my word. Frankly if 'Come and See My Sacrifice' doesn't leave a grin on your face there is something wrong with you, or me. Either way I certainly enjoyed myself!
50.
11.
Virus - The Agent That Shapes The Desert
Jazzy avantgarde metal fed on a diet of stoner rock, what more could you ask for?
50.
12.
Symphony X - Iconoclast
Begads they've done it yet again! Progressive Power performed to the high standard you are almost guranteed from Symphony X and with a nice change in terms of theme.
50.
13.
Pantheïst - Pantheist
Something about this release just touches my very being, it must be the sombre yet moving doom which slowly evolves into a strange combination of mixed feelings of hope yet sadness. Very unique take on the doom genre with some Anathema type Floydian meanderings.
50.
14.
Steven Wilson - Grace For Drowning
Being the Porcupine Tree fan that I am I thought I might check out Steve's 2nd solo effort. Let me tell you I certainly don't regret it, you'll find some inspiring tunes here in this mesmerizing blend of art pop and progressive rock.

Thanks mate! Chances are if you like the unusual vocals of Bruce Lamont, particularly what he did with Yakuza, you'll find it listenable.

Sweet list! We share many favourites, especially of the lesser-known variety. +1 for Orwell and Lazuli, also. They didn't make it onto my list but maybe they should have. Decisions, decision!

Since there are so many similar albums but in different spots, I'd love it if you added little notes or descriptions talking about what you liked in each album. Makes a list more interesting, to peer into the mind of its creator

Thanks There were far too many notable Prog albums last year such as those of Orwell and Lazuli to account for them all!

That's a good idea, I have seen other lists (like your's) with comments on the albums, makes for a more informative read that's for sure. I'll see what I can do.
