1990, the world starts to move in mysterious ways. Clouds all over Europe, shadows rising hide the sun, a new dawn of pure decadence is about to begin. Paradise is Lost and its fallen children are Nick Holmes, Greg Mackintosh, Aaron Aedy, Stephen Edmondson and Matthew Archer that farewelled all happiness and lost themselves in the yard of a cemetery on a gloomy mourning day, five black figures in perfect harmony with the dreary landscape. When all doom/death metal bands try to play faster and faster a band from the UK named Paradise Lost slows down playing primary doom/death metal; the fallen angels' cries turned into bleak symphonies.

Otherwise agree, but my K7 - me - K7 dictionary would change one line into: "but it's a bit weaker than the followed albums"

Aaaaah, silly me. I used the second explanation for "Followers". You get lost in that dictionary.

I wasn't talking about the language, I was talking about the back and forth opinion then giving it a ten. That is a description that something worth 10 does not get.

i didn't bother with that because I took it for granted... It's not like it's the first person who says "it's good but not that much but still a masterpiece"

It reminds me of Solemn 23's awful Mastodon review.

Generally, this is a very decent, mediocre, easy-listening album; yet rather unchallenging at times. It's a strong well-composed album through a great production, though it tends to be a bit too repetitive and generic here and there, especially compared to their older work, but still a great album in the end.

Discussing all of this is rather pointless though. We all know Draconian Times is PL's best.
It's the closest thing to a perfect goth rock album there is at the moment.

That italic part is the problem for me, I just don't like to listen to rock music. Sure, it's a very good album, but for me it's less great than PL's earlier releases. For some reason I love Shades of God (lengthy songs, great vocals and amazing solos) more than anything PL has ever released. After that there's Gothic and this one, but I still think Gothic beats this.

This is a fine debut album for a great band. It's very gloomy and harsh and that's why I like it. Though, I still prefer Gothic and Shades Of God.

Exactly my thoughts (like I said in my previous post). I've added this to my (rather incomplete feeling) debut albums list, since it definitely belongs there.

Huh, to me they were still metal enough on Draconian Times. Very light metal but metal nonetheless.

Yeah, I guess so... the thing is, the albums before Icon were much heavier and doomier (if that's even a word ), which is what I prefer. In my opinion, Icon and Draconian Times are extremely overrated, but that's not important for now.

Not as overrated as Gothic tbh... That is THE overrated Paradise Lost album imo. Still wonder why I like this debut so much but find Gothic so meh at times.

The first PL album I heard was In Requiem, and then I worked my way backwards (skipping a lot of albums): Draconian Times, then Icon, then Shades of God etc. After hearing Gothic I was convinced it was the most evil sounding PL album. That's what I thought at least until I heard their debut. So you might like it more because it's darker and more original. I think the tracks on Gothic are overall better, though the difference between these two albums isn't that great. What do you think of Shades of God?

What do you think of Shades of God?

Shades Of God is actually just a tiny bit behind Lost Paradise when it comes to my favorite PL albums. Love the longer songs and the riffs are fantastic there. More of a traditional heavy metal twist to their death/doom formula back in those days but still very creative. There's also a slight bit of thrash thrown on the riffs that I appreciate a lot. Draconian Times would probably be very close to Shades of God in the third place. Basically my top 3 is very close and completely different to each other which is cool since they all together cover the different aspects I admire from their classic period.

Yeah I agree, it's definitely their most creative work in my opinion. I've always thought of Shades of God being a transitional album (Gothic and Icon are way different), but maybe that's what makes it so great. And indeed, the riffs and solos are amazing, overall a fantastic album. Gothic comes in at #2, with Lost Paradise as #3. After that Draconian Times and Icon, then In Requiem. Haven't heard any other albums, but I feel like I've heard their best work already.

That new Bloodbath song made me check this out, to see if Nick's growls were always so mediocre. They were definitely a lot better here. And vocals aside it's a very good album.
Love the Nazi Optimus Priminator on the cover.

This album always gives me huge Sentenced-vibes, some of those guitar melodies and slower parts sound so similar to some of the songs from their debut.

I have no idea why this album is rated so low compare to other PL's albums... Yeah, I wouldn't call it perfect material, but it is heavy, atmospheric, melodic and overall very, very good shit. I really enjoyed this album
