Lately I was trying to find an excuse on Morten Veland creating an one-man project, Mortemia, since he's the mastermind of the successful gothic metal act Sirenia. The only excuses I could find were either his lust for ultimate expression in any aspect (even production/engineering/mixing) or being at the front of vocal expression, since Sirenia is fronted by female vocals and he just escalates the atmosphere with his grunting interpretation. Maybe a mixture of those two, ego (not necessarily in a bad manner) and more expressional views apart from the mainly composing role he has in Sirenia.

Is it any good? I saw the video for whatever that song was and it just seemed so typically Morten.
And I agree, he needs to think of some better names XD

I swear, the next "project" will be Lookatmeimawesome....ia

Seriously. Why do a side project that sounds like everything else he creates? That takes the whole point away from it :S Everything sounds just like Sirenia, besides that it's growl vocals only beside the choirs.

I agree with the majortiy though, it's nothing new, astonishing and fresh to begin with, it's not a successor to Beyond The Veil BUT as I like (old-like) Sirenia sound, growls and choirs, I find the album fairly interesting.

I don't know why, but I'm kinda sure Morten knows better, but simply cannot pull it together. I wished the album would be a wee bit more agressive, then it'd be a blast. So far it's enjoyable, but not amazing. But luckily some songs stand out (I'm particularly fond of The Malice of Life's Cruel Ways).

You think darkness is your ally? You merely adopted the dark. I was born in it. Molded by it. I didn't see the light until I was a man. But it was nothing to me but blinding.

Sirenia and Tristania is better. Mortemia is listenable, but nothing special. These songs could be published on cd2 of a special edition of Sirenia new album.

I am afraid that those who are talking shit about Morten only envy him and his outstanding talent.

1º If he wants to call the band with an -ia end he can, is his band and he can put the name he wants. Maybe you should research more and know why his bands end with an -ia. And for those who care about his band names, just don't listen them.

2º Maybe he only wanted to release another disc in the vein of Sirenia, but without a female voice. Mortemia offers you that.

My only complaint is why he didn't perform clean vocals.

Congratulations Mr. Veland, another unforgattable effort!!!

Actually this was a great album with all tracks except 3 and 5. Groovy and quality stuff as one of the best Morten gave us, a talented musician.

Absolutely loved this album. I'm a sucker for Choral music/ choir vocals so definitely biased but I remember discovering this album back in like 2015 and being blown away. I still listen to the whole thing from time to time. One of my favorite Symphonic Gothic albums.
