If I were to ask you what makes a great Metal band, the answer should be pretty much the same across the board: great albums. In truth, a series of great albums that follow the same structure yet manage to be different enough to be individual works while being similar enough to create a unique trademark sound. Do you see now how fine of a margin bands have to operate? Finland's Insomnium have established themselves as a juggernaut of Gothenburg Metal with a trilogy of sublime releases 2002's In The Halls Of Awaiting, 2004's Since The Day It All Came Down & 2006's Above The Weeping World. Then they managed to cleverly modernize their sound with 2009's Across The Dark. With a growing fan base and so many solid works behind them, their new release One For Sorrow has been one of the most anticipated albums of the year, and for good reasons.

One For Sorrow: the old children's nursery rhyme about counting up to ten birds in a tree. Makes sense for an Insomnium album to be inspired by it; after all, they've had these birds flying around in their album art for a while. Their fifth full-length respectively adapts to the rhyme with ten tracks of fairly varied Gothenburg metal in that trademark Insomnium sound.

Finally got round to listening to this album today. I loved it. Surprising because their previous stuff that I have listened to have never clicked with me (Across the Dark & Above The Weeping World). Perhaps my sad mood today suited it perfectly.

Funny that you should mention these two albums, because I think Above the Weeping World is (one of) their best efforts while Across the Dark is (at least for me) the weakest by far. This one is definitely unique in being less aggressive and more atmospheric - in fact too atmospheric for the "Gothenburg Metal" tag. [Not that genre tags mean anything, anyway...] But, unlike some reviewers, I like it much more than the rather generic and unappealing sound of Across the Dark.

Perhaps because they all sound the same.

I love the new album! It's great seeing such a consistently awesome band still making awesome music! The new album is amazing. There's a poll going on over at Magnet magazine to vote for this week's new releases, and I'm definitely voting for Insomnium! http://www.magnetmagazine.com/2011/10/14/what-album-are-you-most-looking-forward-to-next-week-57/ You can vote as many times as you want!

After 10 spins, i must add: this is definitely a masterpiece. And second best album i've heard this year. And yes, insomnium's best album imo (tho I still have to listen 'Since The Day It All Came Down')...

Perhaps because they all sound the same.

Well, (a) I don't think so [it's the same as saying all power /heavy / sludge / enter-your-genre-here metal bands sound the same], (b) I don't think this album is really typical melodeath. Too much "atmospheric" (for lack of a better word) for that in my opinion...

Let them hate. Like the one poster saying this is depressing, poor me music- when it's actually quite existential- but whatever. Album gets better with each listen.

It is definitely growing on me hard! Fav track at this point is hard to nail down but "Every Hour Wounds" really stands out for me. Need more listens before I can rate this one. I really got into "Across the Dark" and have had high hopes for this latest release.

People are finally finding the band that successfully binds the Gothenburg sound to Finnish cultural heritage. This being one of Insomnium's more straightforward albums certainly helps. I don't personally find this album all that special though.

Arch enemy, AA,DT,and others are just repeating themselves and others. At least its sth fresh and new

That's an odd statement...considering Arch Enemy have changed a lot over the years (from the Johan era to the more thrash-influenced era to the modern melodic era), Dark Tranquillity have evolved since their inception (going from the original "Gothenburg" sound to synth-heavy melodeath)...and Amon Amarth are doing exactly what Insomnium are: sticking to a formula that works.

Don't get me wrong, I love Insomnium's work and Amon Amarth's...but saying one or the other is "fresh and new" is ridiculous. Insomnium have followed the same style since ATWW, Amon Amarth since...everything after their debut more or less.

The ratings for this album are just ridiculous. Talk about over-hyped. Heritage didn't even enter the Top 10 (of course it should've).
