I'm always ranting about when the next thing in Metal is gonna come right?, well finally and after months of waiting I have found a new contestant to my annual "Best new/unknown/underrated act of the year", the entry? Disillusion, the label? Metal Blade Records, the result? An exquisite piece of work!

Let's head back a little first shall we? Disillusion is a relatively new band, formed in 2001, they released a 4-track Demo and a Mcd before grabbing a record deal, and releasing this, their debut album "Back To Times Of Splendor".

I guess it's one of those few records that either you get or you probably never will.

The pinnacle of progressive metal, a monument, absolute perfection.
Oh and the intro to 'Back to the Times of Splendor' actually convinced me to go and buy a Violin... Turns out that they are hard to play so I took it back the next day.

A very lucky find for me. I shrugged it off at first then gave it a very intent listen and was blown away.

Probably the very best progressive album I could ever hear.

Wish they would make another album.

Wish they would make another album.

It won't be as good as this. But I would love to hear another album.

I am so grateful that I could see them perform the whole thing live. One of those albums I put away for months maybe years and it always pulls me back into a sweet embrace.

I hope their follow up will aim to be just as monumental and cohesive as this record.

One of the best albums I've ever heard is ironically, from a sub-genre that imo is the worst of all sub-genres in metal.

The fact that the band is active again and working on new material....

Average at best. Technically flawless, but riffs and melodies are recycled and boring. The only great moment is intro to the title track but it is one minute out of one hour. Not worth it.

I wish I could say this is one of the most ingenious albums ever released, but, simply put, I am not a prog fan. I love the title track (now that one really is a monster of a song!) but most of the rest is far too chaotic and fast-paced to meet my taste.
Do not get me wrong, talking about musicianship this album is probably flawless. Just like most motorcycles: technically flawless - but I prefer driving by car...

Not my style of prog metal but it has quality. Grows with more listens naturally like any other prog album.

Time for me to talk about that opening; just that first ±minute is pure metallic bliss to me. The way the lead and rhythm guitars build and build with some heavy riffs and tasty leads, all instruments ramping up the intensity in the space of a mere minute to the first explosive verse.
Amazing.
It screams "metal", regardless of what style, subgenre, etc. It's just metal as fuck, to put it bluntly.
They couldn't have picked a better opener for their first album. It sets the tone, unfortunately a little too well since little else on the album comes close for me. (Yes, title track, I see you, I might discuss you some other day.)

I'm just sad that I found this album this late. I enjoyed every second of it. Could be an absolute 10 for me, if the 2nd and the 3rd track clicked with me more. The last 4 minutes of the last track is just unforgettable.
