I am not a great fan of black metal, especially not fairly well-produced "raw"/"brutal"/"intense" black metal. I listen to some atmospheric stuff, but that's all. I am not a great fan of symphonic metal either, in my opinion not many bands succeed to create symphonic metal with enough quality. Rhapsody of Fire is one band that manages to do it, and Therion as well even if their symphonic arrangements are more in the background in some way. But with this album, the band Dimmu Borgir has managed to create my favourite symphonic metal album, and probably also my favourite black metal album ever. After Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia it is arduous for any musician to repeat something to that level, but Dimmu Borgir got really close to it. As a normalcy, the album starts with a symphonic part, but the riffs in track 1 are not something distinctive. The orchestral part is really trying hard to help this track look exceptional but sadly unsuccessful in my opinion. "Progenies Of The Great Apocalypse" is the ooze of Mustis's talent; Vortex's clean vocals rule, and that sudden blast after the clean part when all of them are riding their instruments like a wild horse is terrific. Although the last couple of years have seen Norway's leading elite melodic black metal act Dimmu Borgir release a mini live E.P. "Alive In Torment" and the C.D./D.V.D. set "World Misanthropy" , it's the studio follow up to 2001's "Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia" that fans have been really waiting for with high anticipation. This album was fantastic. I think if anyone were ever going to listen to Dimmu for the first time, this is the album they should listen to.

Yes, it's very impressive with this sound, all with this blooms, and tiny little details to make it bombastic. But on the other side, I can understand all the trve-blackers, why they hate the newer DB albums.

More dumbed down and accessible. At least tolerable, sounds better than Dimmu pretending to play black metal. Lol at the failed Immortal like riffing thrown randomly into the songs. At first I thought Shagrath was trying to sound like Abbath in some songs only to check up the lineup and learn that actually Abbath did provide some vocals on this. The clean vocals on progenies of the apocalypse are just everyday over the top nonsensical power metal wankery and the song in itself is one of the worst you will ever hear.
---- You are not metal enough until you visit Kenya. The cradle of mankind, where man learnt first to work with stones and first enjoyed the sounds produced by banging stones which later influenced metal in all its sounds and genres.

I find it quite disappointing that this is the peak of sympho black and ever since after this album no band ever dared venturing out of the occasional castlevaniash background piano over the regular 2nd wave black even 20 years later :|

Downfall but not sui rapid. My first DB album. I remember video for ''Progenies Of The Great Apocalypse'' to me it was blast then, wow, I never have seen anything like this on MTV videos. I got album, I did listen to it but I got fats and rapid many Norwegian bands early and old albums, same to this, and after then I hardly listened to ''new DB'' and hated it a bit. Now I re listen well like I said a bit downfall, I still like Progenies Of The Great Apocalypse song but to me best song is ''Vredesbyrd''
