This one feels weak compared to Erosion, and even weaker than Renounce. I would have rated this even lower if it were longer.
So much weaker. Really not that interesting

Yup, they really dropped the ball on this one.

It depends a lot for me. Sometimes I wanna drop it to 6 or 7 if I pay too much focus on it but I've found myself walking on the streets and a cigg on my mouth (excuse the cliche but it's true) with this in the background and it does work wonders.
But in the end, nothing compared to Erosion which I love a lot.

I have the same sentiments pretty much. I used to have this as a 9, but I think it's about time to drop it to an 8, though.

Coincidence, I am listening to Erosion right now, as I want to be able to judge the whole discography while I still have it fresh in my memory. It almost sounds like it's not the same band. There is absolutely no tension in this one, and it's really disappointing. It's background music compared to Erosion.

Yeah, they changed quite a lot and lost a chunk of their personality on this one. I think if I gave it close listenings I might drop it to a 7 but overall I still enjoy it.

When I reviewed, I noted I felt it was the same band as the progression had already been happening, but as if they skipped a couple steps in the process. A->B->C->F
I liked it when I distanced myself from their prior full-length. It also helped adjust my expectations when I spent a lot of time listening to the dissections of "Circle" where each iteration deviated further from the closing track to Erosion.

Very good analogy - and review by the way. From what I read here most people "moved on" and accepted the change in sound. I suppose it came to me like a "shock" because I absorbed three of their albums for the first time in less than a week. I am sure I would have seen it as an evolution like most of you, instead of a sudden drop in intensity. I think I should wait a little and revisit this one with a new set of ears, just as you did.

Thanks, was not a particularly easy review to write.
It would certainly seem abrupt a switch if you binged on them as opposed to having a couple years in between and an inkling of what was to come. Hugo and I have done an interview and we've exchanged some emails, so I had an idea. Even then it was a bit more than expected, which didn't help coming off the heels of the absolutely fantastic "Erosion."
It might click for you the second pass with some time in between. Might not. But kudos for giving it the second chance later on down the line.

This is one of those albums for me that on first listens seems pretty unassuming at first and yet keeps racking up plays on my iPod. I think I'm finally happy to admit after this last listen that I really like this album - heck, even Empire does it for me now, with its achingly slow buildup. Not quite as good as Erosion but I really dig it.

Yeah I'm in the same camp here. It keeps being played on my iPod haha, even if it isn't as great as their other albums.

I think I am gonna spin this again. The last time I did was a year or so ago, on a long road trip, in my car, the volume cranked to 11...

Did a run through their discography recently and while my opinion of this didn't change radically, I definitely warmed up to it more. My initial disappointment was likely due to the fact it shared a name with the same band that released Erosion more than anything. Still, not exactly mindblowing material.

I've come to adore this album over the years, but even I'm not entirely sure why it's endured so strongly for me - I would probably say 'objectively' Erosion is the more impressive achievement, but something about this album, and particularly the title track, really draws me in
